Does anyone know if the campus buses and/or Lynks buses provide transportation to any of the local shopping areas near campus? My daughter is from out of state and will not likely be bringing her car. We were wondering if there will be any sort of transportation to local movies, restaurants, shopping or if she is going to be stranded without her car.

The Lynxs goes to all the local malls and shopping center. So she shouldn’t have any problems getting around. She will soon meet up with alot of people who have cars and off to the beach she will be going. Here is the link for the Lynx system: http://www.golynx.com/ For Fashion Square Mall she can just stay on one bus. Its a decent mall www.orlandofashionsquare.com For the other malls she will have to change buses.

If she has a chance I would suggest she head over to Winter Park downtown on a Saturday morning. Its a lovely little town with a farmers market. Pick up some peanuts and walk over to the park that is just across the street. The squirels are all spoiled and love for people to feed them.

Don’t forget a walk in downtown around the famous fountain. At night it changes colors.

Thanks for the information jswdlw, I was wondering the same thing since I will be taking public transportation.

I know that Orlando is such an amazing city outside of Disney. I am glad that I will be able to fully experience it for the next four years.

Don’t be afraid to explore with another individual who is not from Florida. Floridians seem to forget that the state has alot more to offer than beaches and tourist attractions. Places like Winter Park, Mt Dora, and downtown Orlando have such a different flavor. Oh and don’t forget about St Augustine that is just outside Jacksonville. Its beautiful during the holiday season between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Also for everyone who is new to the hurricane season. You are located in a good location in the fact that a majority of the hurricanes do not impact central Florida like they do on the coast. We get TONS of notice about the path of the storms and IF the storm is to travel through central Florida the city closes down.

I have lived in Florida for just under 6 years, and I have only been to Orlando a few times, but never to downtown Orlando. Even though I am not leaving state, I know that it will still feel like a completly new environment for me since Orlando has a lot to offer.

A few years ago I lived on the east coast of Florida, and a few months later, after I moved, several tornados hit the neighborhood that I lived in. I lived in Central Florida, about an hour from Orlando, during Hurricane Charlie, Frances, and Jeanne, and there was little damage to my town. Yes we do get plenty of notice for hurricanes though. They don’t his us quick like they do the coast. We just have to wait it out and hope for the best.

Unless your daughter is from WAY out of state, I would REEEEEEEEAALLLY advise her to bring her car. Public transportation is really iffy.

Did you have bad experiences with Orlando’s bus system redslash?

So many people have cars on campus that in no time you/your student will make friends with someone who has one. My daughter always takes a carload of kids with her when she makes shopping and food shopping runs. No problem at all.
