Hi everybody, I read CC all the time but I've never posted before. I'm a rising junior and I got a pretty cool volunteer opportunity for the summer. The problem is according to Google Maps, it's about 6 miles away and I need some way of getting there since I can't drive. My dad's the only person who can drive me and his work starts an hour before the place opens and an hour after it closes, which is why he doesn't want to drive me but I really wouldn't mind waiting (I need something to force me to start my summer reading). I've looked up the public bus schedule and it's possible but I just don't have the money. I could try riding my bike, but if you know anything about NJ drivers you'd be scared too. Ugh. Any suggestions?

Go with your dad and then either hang out outside (if there are nice parks/benches and you feel safe), if not go to a coffee shop and read. I have been doing a similar thing where I go with my mom and then go where ever I need to be, it works well because it forces you to do your summer work…

You could have a friend meet with you if they live nearby, for the hour before and after.

Thanks for your suggestions! It’s on a college campus so I think it’s pretty safe and there is security. Now I just need to work on persuading my dad that I’ll be fine.

Talk to your volunteer coordinator.
You may be needed to help earlier than the official opening hours so you can enter the building with staff.

Oh, that’s a good idea I’ll ask about that. Thanks!
