Any tips on best ways to get to LAX and back?

There are “Fly Away” buses that go from LA’s Union Station to LAX. To get to Union Station, you need to take the Amtrak train from Irvine to LA. When you arrive at Union Station, you can hop on the “Fly Away” bus which takes people to LAX.

I think there’s the flyaway shuttle from Irvine station. So you need to have either your friends drive you there or to take the local bus, which would be at least one transfer.

There are also the Supershuttle blue vans, they cost about $30 each way.

Has anyone had experience with the free parking at Union Station? Would you trust it enough to leave your car there for a few weeks while you fly away somewhere else for winter break? Or probably better to leave your car at UCI and just take transportation?

Leave your car at school.
Take the UC shuttle to John Wayne Airport.
Then take the SuperShuttle to LAX.

How come you cant just drive to LAX?

Parking at LAX adds up quickly. Even in the off-site lots it is not cheap and the OP is talking a “few” weeks- that would be couple of hundred if not more.

Thanks for the help guys!

Actually - now I’m thinking of doing another trip for Thanksgiving, which is just 4 days. Should be no problem using the free parking Irvine Station lot, right? Has anyone actually done it? (Drive from UCI to Irvine Station, take shuttle to LAX, go away for 4-5 days, come back to LAX, Irvine Station, etc)

Let me Google that for you.

Thanksgiving may be a mad scramble for parking spaces.
