Transportation To/From UCLA

Alright, after a hellish 2 hours, I finally registered for Orientation 203. Now for my next problem: How the hell am I going to get there from San Jose and back? Anybody have suggestions?

Fly Southwest Airlines to LAX

Take FlyAway shuttle to Westwood

???

Profit!

My son did that for his Overnight Stay Program back in April and worked out well.

I’m planning to fly in from Oakland. How do you take the FlyAway shuttle?

They have some very clearly marked signs that says “FlyAway Shuttle” once you stepped out of the terminal. Just make sure you are going on the Westwood one.

Westwood Flyaway = $5 JFGI for when they pick up, sometimes every 30 minutes, otherwise every hour between certain hours… usually 11PM is the latest.

Thanks, this helped me figure out how I’m getting to. Unfortunately I cannot use the same method to get back (stupid 9 PM ending) and Southwest doesn’t have any flights till 6 AM the next morning. Anyone have any suggestions?

everything you want to know about FlyAway
[Non-Stop Bus Service to LAX (1003097)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1003097)

You can use Prime Time shuttle (book online, or call them the day of) for $15, but it’s a shared ride - which can be very annoying

Does Amtrak go to Westwood? Anybody use this method? This seems to be my only way of getting over this sans driving.

It goes to union station. They are working on a subway line though, and it could reach Westwood as soon as 2036.

More feasibly, the Expo line could reach Westwood Blvd by 2015.

Amtrak actually has a bus stop on campus, at the corner of Gayley/Strathmore.

Thanks guys. Amtrak is probably what I’ll use to go there, but I still don’t know how I’m going to go back.

You may be able to arrange staying on in the dorm an extra night (for a fee). I know they allow people to get to orientation the night before and stay in the dorms so maybe they allow you to stay an extra night. But are you sure about the 9:00pm ending time? The regular orientation is absolutely over by 6:00pm to allow the hundreds of kids to get to the airport and catch flights home. Why are you saying it is over at 9:00? I would check that as I don’t think it is right. And Southwest flights to and from LAX should be pretty reasonable. Use Fly Away to get back and forth from the airport to Westwood or you can make a reservation on Super Shuttle for your exact flight time (but it is more like $18). They will take you to the airport late as well. UCLA really doesn’t want to make this complicated for everyone and I think if an orientation session is over at 9:00pm then you could stay in the dorms.

The 9 PM figure comes from: [UCLA Orientation Program](http://www.orientation.ucla.edu/trschedule.htm)
As well as my confirmation email which states:
Session #: 203
Arrival Date & Time: 7/15/2010 8:00:00 PM (I’m doing early arrival)
Check-in Date & Time: 7/16/2010 7:30:00 AM
Depart Date & Time: 7/16/2010 9:00:00 PM

I know that they offer $50 accommodations for the night before, but unfortunately for the night after, I read somewhere that you’re pretty much on your own. They have a word document with all of the local lodgings with prices, and the lowest one is $140. I really don’t want to shell out $140 to stay the night (I’m working with an extremely tight budget here). I think they need a “Late Departure” program too. =p

Maybe you can call and find out what you would miss if you had to leave the orientation program early.

Well it says on [UCLA Orientation Program](http://www.orientation.ucla.edu/trschedule.htm) that
8:00 pm - Enrollment in Fall Quarter classes
I don’t mean to sound obnoxious, but that is pretty much the ONLY reason why I’m going to orientation in the first place. Suffice to say, I will not be leaving early. Thanks though.

Dude, from the Bay Area it takes like nine or ten hours one way to get there. Trust me when I say you don’t want to do that. Amtrak is best for people who live in the San Joaquin Valley or along the Pacific Surfliner route. Southwest Airlines is just a little more expensive and is infinitely faster.

Yeah… don’t take the train unless you’re trying to kill yourself. There may be a bus out of Santa Monica that runs to San Jose, my brother’s girlfriend took it when she visited him. Also, I’d check flights to SFO since the reason there may not be a late flight is due to SJC’s late night flight restriction.

I don’t think Southwest runs flights after 9 PM in general. I looked into LAX to SFO, SJC and OAK. I would also have to factor in a 1-2 hour check in.
