Rose's website says that people on campus are nice in giving others rides into Terre Haute. Is there no other way of transportation into town besides asking a friend? For anyone that attends Rose, do you recommend bringing a car?

Yes… definitely bring your car if you have one. There is virtually NO other way of transportation into town (besides walking).

You will not have any problems finding a way into town or Wal-Mart. The RA and SA have cars and schedule optional dinners on the week-end. Many people are very nice about asking if anyone needs a ride when they go there too.

There is food places that deliver.

Ya… while you can’t walk (well you could…) to any place, you still have options.
a) Bring a car. Lots of people have them, I thought something like 40% of freshman or something.
b) Bring a bike. During the summer/fall/spring months you can bike to places like the food stores (Kroger), coffee shops (Java Haute/Starbucks), some restaurants (1st Wok, Spaghetti and Sub Shop, and the usual KFC/McDonalds/Taco Bell places) without getting on too many big roads.
c) Get to know people on your floor. Having a car probably helped me a lot Freshman year. I was always willing to drive people places, and I think that helped me make a few of the friends I did and at least helped me get to know some other people. Without a car you can find plenty of people that go places (Walmart runs, etc) and can ask around if you need more specific help.

That said, a car is really nice to have.

A car is nice to have, but I went half of freshman year without one and didn’t really miss it. A lot depends on your personality and tastes, if you don’t mind just going to dinner with the other people on your floor or picking up stuff at Walmart whenever your friends go you won’t have a problem. Remember that if you do have a car, you will probably end up driving other people around as well. Bottom line: lots of people have cars and lots of people don’t, and both options work just fine.

I did not have a car freshman year. This was easy to do because I was on the meal plan, so I had no absolute need to get off campus to stock up on groceries. I also had friends with cars, and whenever our floor went out to eat, they drove me.

For holidays, I was able to grab rides with students to the Indianapolis airport. One of the suckiest things about Terre Haute is the lack of commercial airlines at its airport. But there are plenty of people driving to Indy for breaks, so it’s usually no problem to catch a ride.

Like others have said, though, a car is really nice to have, especially after freshman year. I lived off campus for two years, and that would have been impossible to do without a car.

Yay for bringing back an old thread! I’m curious, is anyone who plans to go to Rose bringing his or her car?
