Hey guys,
I just got a letter stating that WashU is giving me a travel grant covering my roundtrip plane ticket to fly out of Texas to come visit them. Is this a fairly common occurrence? I figure the number of letters can't be too terribly high because it was hand-signed, etc.

Has anyone else received one of these this year? Alternatively, if you received one in previous years, did you get in and/or get merit scholarships?

I got it twice two years ago. Are you going to Discovery Weekend? First time I went there were another 300 or so in the same situation. I don't know about scholarships, I didn't get any.

Rank 1/506
ACT: 34 (36 M;34Eng;33 science;32 reading)
SAT 2's; 800 (math II) 800 (bioE) 790 (US History)
Student Gov president
He did get a card about applying for merit scholarships at Washington U and filled it out-that's all;
I'd say he has chances at Ivys, but not a sure thing, for sure.

My D also got a travel grant for Discovery Weekend and she's very excited. We visited there during spring break, but it'll be great for her and all these kids to actually visit some classes and get the real feel of the campus. Do other schools do this kind of thing?

when is discovery weekend? the letter they sent me didn't specify a required time for the grant, it just said basically "call us and schedule a visit whenever." I'm assuming this "discovery weekend" but be the ideal time, then?

Discovery Weekend is quite soon: Thurs, Sept 18 - Sat, Sept 20. Prospective students can tour the campus, attend classes and stay overnight with a current student. They also have various sessions in the evening and throughout the day such as "Get Acquainted", "Student Leaders Panel" and various college-specific tours, presentations and Q&A. Sounds like good stuff.

It seems like a lot of people are going to Discovery Weekend.

From the dates offered (September 15-17; September 22-30; October 3-10; October 12-15; October 20-22; October 27-November 1; and November 4-20), which ones would you guys say are best for visiting (special events, activities) and worst (midterms or finals)?

I am a little disappointed I did not get an invitation. I got the application packet for merit scholarships so I assume they know that I am interested, have sent them my 34 ACT score and alternate score to superscore at 35 (which they take) and have made NMS Semifinalist. I'm not sure what exactly prompts them to invite you. Perhaps they are aware of the fact that I live 6 hours away in Arkansas and have already visited campus so I might be a waste of resources? I sure would appreciate an overnight visit.
