Traveling to Ithaca

Since I live in Ohio I was wondering about the best possible way to travel to Cornell.

1) Use Amtrak to get to Syracuse and take the shuttle over, but if Im taking a lot of luggage and other stuff this could be problamatic
2) Fly into Ithaca
3) Fly into Syracuse

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks !!!

of those three I'd go with flying into Ithaca, the airport is a short taxi ride to Cornell, they also offer airport Limos but I'm not sure about the price on that. The Limos will accomodate however much luggage you have though. Syracuse airport is a good hour away from Cornell, so unless you have someone who can pick you up it might be a bit costly.

Hahaha, dh277, flying into Ithaca instead of Syracuse will always be at least $100-$200 more expensive, if not $400-$600 more, so the $90 round trip taxi ride between Syracuse and Ithaca from Ithaca Airline Limo (and by limo they mean bus) looks pretty economical.

You really do need to check airplane ticket prices...sometimes the cost to Ithaca is a great deal more; sometimes not. For example, we live in the Washington, DC area...it's a good $300 less to fly to/from Syracuse...and it's $96 (at least it was in Feb, the last time one of us made the trip--w/gas prices approaching tuition (grin), the price may have gone up) round trip in the van...so it's still $200 less...it takes about the same amount of time (because you can't go straight to Ithaca from DC; you have to change planes in either Philly or NYC)...on the other hand, we flew to FL for T-giving break...S flew straight from Ithaca...the price was only $50 more by the time you factored in the cost of the van...and the time was actually quicker, just because of how the schedules worked.

Also, recall that you do not have to buy a round-trip ticket on Ithaca Airline limo...one-way is around $50-$60 (just a bit more than half the round-trip)...the "limo" is actually a van (a mini-van) w/7 seats in it...it certainly would not have held all the stuff S took to college w/him (we filled up a mid-size car and drove up last August)...but if you ship most of your stuff ahead of time, or buy your "room stuff" when you arrive, you could certainly bring the two suitcases the airlines will allow you...

If someone is coming w/you from OH (a parent or friend), you might want to rent a car in Syracuse (Entperprise is by the least expensive...I just rented a car in FL from Enterprise for $35/day, unlimited mileage)...and it would be handy to have those first few days so you can go to WalMart, Target, wherever to get your stuff for your room...then whoever comes w/you could drive it back to Syracuse when he/she/they go back home...

Good luck! Hope you enjoy COrnell as much as S is enjoying it...

Definitely look around for someone to drive with from Ohio. Get your "friends of friends" network going. You will have at least a half-dozen pieces of luggage, so flying plus shipping gets expensive. I doubt that it would take much less time than driving when you add in airline check-in, possibly changing planes and getting from the airport to campus with all your stuff.

OMother.do you use the Cornell BUs from Montgomery MALL for traveling back and forth for breaks? My DS will be a freshman at Cornell this fall

Hi, glkecon2...welcome to the wonderful world of being a Cornell parent!

Yes, we used the Cornell bus this year--I bought the package of four round-trips in August; we used it twice, sold the other two tickets because S's travel dates didn't work w/the bus schedule. It's GREAT...I recommend it highly!

The wonderful "I guess I will never retire since Cornell's Financial aid office thinks I am 'rich' world OMom? I am very proud that my DS got into Cornell...its been his dream for a few years. I think we will buy the 4 pack of bus tixs too...since other modes of transportation are more costly and take longer
