My daughter was so excited when she was accepted to Trinity University as it is her top choice of all the colleges she applied to. Then she received her merit aid offer ($7500/yr) and was very disappointed. Has anyone heard if Trinity is ever willing to "negotiate" the merit aid packages? We're not sure if we should cross this college off our list or not. Our EFC will be about $25,000 so we may be able to show some need. Anyone with any experience with this school?

If your EFC is $25,000, you may get FA in the package that comes in the Spring. I believe only merit is sent at this time. Congrats! It’s a great school.

My S said that he read on the website that you get FA package one week after they receive your FAFSA, but I am not sure he read that right.

But checking the website I see this, it also concerns the verification process as well, which may not apply, so I can’t find the exact wording:

February 15 is Trinity’s priority date for first year students to submit the FAFSA application online at www.fafsa.ed.gov

"Meeting deadlines is a very important part of the financial aid process especially since funding may be limited. By filing the FAFSA early, a student ensures that he or she will be given the maximum consideration for programs with limited funds.

Once your FAFSA is submitted electronically, our office should receive your results within 3-5 business days. We may be notified that you were selected for verification by the Department of Education, we may select your file for verification, or we may simply generate your financial aid award pacakge (see: Verification). If you submit verification documents to our office, we will make every effort to process your award within 3 weeks. In addition, if you submit a Financial Aid Reinstatement appeal or a Special Circumstances appeal, our goal is to process it within 2-3 weeks. Please understand that during our peak processing times, it may take our office a bit longer to determine your financial aid award."

The timeline says FA awards will be sent in April.

From what those in the know have frequently posted on CC, approximately 30% of people are selected for verification. I think that means per school, so it is possible one could be selected for more than one school, but only send the info to the school chosen to attend.

Hope that helps.

Double checked with son, he said it is in admissions letter he received.

“If you are planning to apply for need-based aid, please submit the FAFSA between January 1 and February 15. We will notify you of any need-based funding for which you qualify one week after we receive your FAFSA results. If you apply for and are awarded any specialized scholarships, you will receive notification by April 1.”

I should have checked the source before I posted.

EW parent-
Yeah, I was accepted with a $5000 award and was a little disappointed. The whole family wants nothing to do with FAFSA so if I’m going, I guess this will be it. I was curious about the negotiating thing myself…

Congrats on the $7500-wish it made more of a dent!

All comments welcome-I’m was thrilled to be admitted!

Congratulations to those who recieved merit aid. I would echo the opinion that Trinity is a great school. Wife and brother in law both attended.

Would any of you who received merit awards mind posting your basic stats? I know a lot of factors go into merit awards by the schools, but it is helpful to those of us looking at options for next year.
