Hello everyone. This isn't really such a crucial issue, but it is more of a suggestion or some advice. I am currently a sophomore, and I took AP Calculus AB. I am in the IB Program and, therefore, have a more narrow selection of classes and electives. I only have one available elective, for my other classes are all IB classes, mathematics included (IB Pre-Calculus. I really think it is a waste of a class, but it is mandatory). So far, I have taken two years of chorus. I love it. I would really hate to go through a year of not taking it. And what makes it worse is that next year I would be in Vocal Ensemble, the highest choir in my school. They go on all the trips and competitions, and it sounds like a great class to have. However, I feel that I should take AP Calculus BC next year, since I took AB this year, and I should take it while I still remember everything from AB. Just to let you all know, I have two spaces for electives for senior year. I definitely am using one for Vocal Ensemble. I just don't know whether to use the other one for AP Calculus BC and thus, allowing me to take Vocal Ensemble next year as well, or discrete mathematics, assuming I either took BC next year or self-studied and took the AP Exam. I fear that I will be rusty with my Calculus skills if I decide to take BC senior year. But then again, I will be in Math Honors society next year, so I really don't know... And what do you suggest the universities would be more impressed with? Thanks!

Well if you did AP BC next year what would you take senior year?
Colleges usually want 4 years of English, Math, Science, etc. so if you didn’t have that it may look a little strange or like you have mentioned, a gap year in math might not be good for transitioning from sophmore year to senior.

If I did BC next year, then I would be taking IB Mathematics senior year (I take it either way), along with Discrete Mathematics.

And remember, I still have to do IB Pre-Calculus next year. But ehh, that’s a stoop down, so it makes no sense, really. But that’s IB for you -.-

So even if you were to pass AP Calc you would have to take IB Pre-Calc? I would take Chorus then instead of AP Calc BC if thats what you want.

Yes xD I’m telling you, IB works in very mysterious ways. The Calculus classes are not really my math classes that I have to take, but they take up an elective. Sorry for not being descriptive enough for this. But, I do love math. And that’s a subject in which I want to keep pursuing. However, I do want to have a good time in high school by being in my choir. It would just feel weird going through a year without it. As I mentioned in the beginning, I’m just scared that I will lose my Calculus in senior year and have a rough time in BC. Any suggestions on that?

BC is not significantly tougher and does not contain that much extra material than regular AB, so as long as you retain a bit of AB and review some before senior year, you should be good to go (you love math anyways…)

Also, self-studying for AP Calc BC exam for a 5 is pretty easy, so I’d recommend that.

Do what you enjoy, take choir!

Thanks for the advice! I think I might just do what you said: self-study for BC and take choir next year. I will be in Math Honors Society next year, so if anything, I can always get help from the sponsor, who happens to be my Calculus AB teacher. Also, I do believe I did very well on the AP Exam for AB. So I guess that should be a plus for BC, right? I just hope you’re right about self-studying for BC being easy :)
