I'm not sure about that...if I were you, I would contact USC and ask them about it. Though do you want to go because you want to visit the school because you applied there, or do you want to go hang out with your friend in LA?

to visit the school. won't she not be able to hang out in la?

I don't know how much free time we are given...I imagine not too much. I remember someone on a thread saying that students arrive 5:30-ish, eat dinner, and then do activities with our host. We have interviews the next morning and we can visit a few classes before leaving around lunchtime.

You might be able to go, but I'm not sure your friend's host would be happy housing two people, or if you would have any time to do fun stuff. I guess you could ask your friend to talk to her host when/if she finds out who it is.

:/ nah ill just throw in the towel, lol

da mn, i should have applied by the scholarship deadline! then maybe i wouldnt have this problem. lol

Pafather ~ Thanks for the info: not what I wanted to hear, but it's better to know.

I'm posting it on this thread as well, just so people know a bit more.
Here is a quick summary of what Explore USC was like for me. I'm not sure if it is the same this year, but this is what happened last year.

Arrive around 11 and get checked in. Put luggage in admissions building and get free t-shirt and some bagels/donuts.

Go to welcome assembly program, where everyone introduces themselves and the band plays a bit.

Go to specific seminars with parents. I went to the Thematic Options one, where they gave us candy.

Take a walking tour of campus with other interviewees.

Eat lunch at some point in time.

All of the scholars meet up again and split from their parents for the night. The parents go to a nice dinner while the students get matched with their hosts. There was also a question and answer session here.

Get luggage and bring to room, and eat dinner at either EVK or Parkside.

Go to ground zero for a concert/comedy show/a capella group.

Rush back to dorm to watch whatever TV show is on that night (for me it was the OC, which I had never seen before).

At this point what you do is really up to the discretion of your host. I went out to coffee and got answers to a bunch of questions.

Go to sleep.

Wake up and prepare for interview. You receive the time for your interview in a packet you get during check-in.

Go to breakfast at either EVK or Parkside.

Go interview.

Attend a class. They give you a list of possibilities, and you can also go to any of the classes your host will sneak you into.

Meet up with parents for lunch. Hear some pretty speeches.

Go home and sleep!

I think students need to be their earlier, it is the hosts who arrive at 5:30.

omg I'm so excited!!

So I got the acceptance packet thing on the 27th, so it looks like i'm a scholarship candidate?? My highest SAT score was 2160, weighted gpa of 4.1, unweighted 4.0, in the Resident Honors Program...

how did u apply for the resident honors program?

You have to get the application from the rhp website, then send all that stuff in. But it's too late now... the deadline is dec. 10th.

Hi... i was just wondering if anyone knew that if you interview for the trustee scholarship, but don't get it, is there any chance to receive any other scholarship?

^ I believe you are still eligible get the presidential, and probably the dean's..I think that's what it's called... (1/4 tuition)

I just received my acceptance packet; however there's nothing in it about me getting an interview, though there is an "Explore USC 2006 Pamphlet". Does USC send a separate letter with details concerning the interview?

Are the scholarships awarded solely on the applicant's interview? I'm pretty nervous around strangers and an interview would cause me to quickly urinate in my pants. I will probably be eligible for the Presidential NMF half tuition scholarship, so, say USC invites me for a Trustee interview, I decline to go (because interviewing is not my thing) and ultimately end up attending anyway in the Fall '06, will I still receive my NMF scholarship (to my knowledge, requires no interview)?

LetMeIntoCal: I just got my admission packet today as well, am NMSF, and don't know about the scholarships yet either. But I was under the impression that generally anyone who will receive a Dean's, Presidential, or Trustee scholarship needs to interview.

hey LetMeIntoCal - I'll take that trustee interview from you if you want!

jk.

but seriously. i reallllly want to be accepted w/ scholarship consideration... i'm poor...

LetMeIntoCal...I got my Explore USC letter a few days after I got my acceptance letter. Give it a couple of days and you should hear from them :) Though...I didn't get any Explore USC pamphlet in my acceptance letter, so maybe my case is different from yours.

For the interviews, are the expenses paid? I was wondering if it was possible to stay in LA for a few days, or whether there was a set travel schedule, etc.

^ They pay for half of your airfaire (up to $60 if in CA, AZ, or NV I think, and up to $200 if from another place)

I don't think there's a set travel schedule though.

I think u can only stay w/ your host on the first night, otherwise u should book a hotel room to stay longer...

Yes, very true. We love you guys, but neither you nor us want you to be in our room for longer than a night. It would get rather cramped. The Radisson is across the street, and there are tons of other hotels in the area.
