Truth about Boarding school? The REAL truth please.

Okay, so I'm in the top girls school in my country (it's in Asia). It's extremely competitive, and it has relatively good college matriculations. However, like I said, it's wayyy more competitive than even a prep school in the US.

I am considering applying to boarding schools in the US for the 11th grade. I know it's very competitive and yes, I also know I'll be applying late decisions.

I'm only looking for girls schools, and I know that: Hotchkiss and Middlesex are the top ones there. Are the chances of getting in very low?

More than the chances though, I am worried about several things. For instance, boarding school is often said to have alcahol consumption. Coming from Asia, this is non-existent in the top schools (and even in others it's not so much). So it's really a worry.

Also, what is the drug abuse like, and well, the whole BGR thing (boy-girl relatioships)? (again these are very rare in the school i go to. I'm not even talking abot NC 16/ M18 stuff, I'm just talking about simple relationships)

More than this, it's the influence of all three issues and how much peer pressure there is. Where I'm schooling now, that stuff just doesn't happen. So there's no peer pressure on it and well, living at home, it's "safer" and you're more "watched".

Anybody cares to share? Any Asian students want to share their experiences?
I understand that Bearcat goes to Hotchkiss...could you share about your experiences there?

Thanks! I really appreciate this alot!

and yeah...I've read the "truth about boarding school" website. It gives all the upsides, and hardly any downsides.

See the thread below this one (now)...called the Dark Side of Boarding Schools. It has the answers you're looking for.

I'm only looking for girls schools, and I know that: Hotchkiss and Middlesex are the top ones there. Are the chances of getting in very low?

hotchkiss is not a girls school :) at least i kinda know i m not a girl, right?

also..seems like you go to raffles... a girl from my school came from that school and is now in 10th grade (she's older than i m !#$#@! and i m a senior)...anyway..i can give you her contact information if she agrees :)

bearcats-You go to Hotchkiss!!!
I didn't know that. It's a nice surprise!!
I went to Hotchkiss for my school tour and interview and your
school is absolutely amazing^^(I had interviewed with Patricia
Redd Johnson by the way, she's cool)
Lucky you!

Whoops, yeah I realized that right after. I mixed up Hockaday and Hotchkiss :p My bad. As for middlesex...i don't know where I got that idea :O

For the longest of times, I thought that Brearley in NY was a boarding school- I'm awfully blur like that!

And yeah...you probably read my other post regarding your slight "slamming" of RJC. So yes, I'm from Raffles. You mean to say that there is a transfer from Raffles in Hotchkiss? I don't need her contact info, but could I just know this:

-when did she apply and why in the world is she in 10th grade if she's older than 17?
-was it hard for her, considering that she's like from Singapore

is hockaday that school down in texas or something? i kinda heard about it but it's definitely not the ones we hear a lot about...so are u applying to hockaday or hotchkiss lol?

Hockaday is in Texas...I think, but I'm not at all sure. In terms of ranking, it's just slightly below Hotchkiss, so yeah.

I have no idea if I can even apply. I know it's like over deadlines, but most of these schools welcome like late applications- I asked.

But I really would like the above questions asked (regarding alcohol, drugs and influence as such)- i know their already in the thread below, but more information is welcome.

Middlesex is also a co-ed school. Most of the boarding schools are for both boys and girls. I don't know your reasons for wanting to go, but have you considered just going for the summer? Many boarding schools have summer programs. Some of the well regarded girl's boarding schools in the northeast include Emma Willard, Miss Porter's School, and Westover.

for hotchkiss, there's something called the no chance policy... if you are caught doing drugs or alcohol, you are automatically kicked out...you dont even get a DC (disiplinary comittee meeting)... some other schools have the same policy...and for some others, you might get probation for the first time and kicked out the second, really depends on the school. in the past couple years that i have been here, there were 3 kids who got kicked out for drugs..
i know some kids here drink...but never heard any on campus..mostly offcampus during weekends... but it doesnt affects me, so i dont care...

The top girls boarding schools are Miss Porters, Emma Willard, and Westover.
I think Hockaday has a low ratio of boarding to day students. As a boarder I think it is best to look at schools where there are a majority of boarding students.
I believe there is relatively little alcohol or drug abuse on campus. You will always have some, but it is not pervasive. Substance use almost always results in expulsion.

hockaday has rolling admissions. you can still apply..it is however, way less diverse than the top boarding schools up in the northeast...3 % international students and 16% on financial aid.. and the average class size is much bigger too, 15 kids per class...on the other hand, they offer ESL(english as a second language), which most elites dont offer (simply becoz they rarely give breaks to internationals whose english level arent there)... so that might be a plus

for hotchkiss, we very very rarely take late applicant... are there any that they accept? Yes..like one in a year... last year it was an absolutely amazing lacrosse player who's also a very good scholar... unless they really want you..they dont look into late apps..simply becoz the admissions office can easily fill 2 equally competitive class from the applicant pool.... and they reject kids that they would really want but simply arent spaces for them... so there really is not much incentive for them to look into the late pool

Hmm..so basically it's present, but it's not persuasive and there's no excessive peer pressure to join in with the drugs and alcahol (or any at all?) Cuz I'm not bothered if people are drinking or getting themselves stoned, it's more the idea that some people try to push it on you and force you along with it.

And Bearcats, I editted my post above but I think you didn't see:

And yeah...you probably read my other post regarding your slight "slamming" of RJC. So yes, I'm from Raffles. You mean to say that there is a transfer from Raffles in Hotchkiss? I don't need her contact info, but could I just know this:

-when did she apply and why in the world is she in 10th grade if she's older than 17?
-was it hard for her, considering that she's like from Singapore

Hockaday sounds like a wonderful day school but might not be a great boarding experience. Only 13% board, and only 3% are international. This is from petersons. If you don't have family or some other connection to Dallas, I suggest looking at boarding schools with a high boarding population.

I cannot help you with drugs and drinking because I just don't know. I heard that schools with larger day populations might have more incidents with this because it is easier for the day students to obtain drugs and alcohol, but I just don't know if there is any truth to this.

I don't know your reasons for wanting to go, but have you considered just going for the summer? Many boarding schools have summer programs. Some of the well regarded girl's boarding schools in the northeast include Emma Willard, Miss Porter's School, and Westover.

That's just the thing! It sucks because our holidays are TOTALLY different from what the rest of the world has- not talking about 1-2 week differences.

She's turning 18 in march. She thinks applying for 11th grade is really hard and she also wants time to adapt to the environment

She's taking a pretty hard courseload for 10th graders (but considering that she's a double repeat.. it's the way it should be) She's doing well in her math and science classes..but had some struggle in literature and history.. she barely missed 2nd honor roll first semester... which would be around top 30% of the class.

Whoa. That's an uncommon thing to do--double repeat I mean.

Anybody else has any experiences they want to share? Of it being absolutely reeky? Or just simply slamming?
