Trying to become a Petroleum Engineer. Should I go to LSU or TAMU?

Currently I am attending a community college to get an associates degree as a engineer tranfer and so far the two college i want to go to is LSU and TAMU.

I know the for certain careers its more about who you know then what you know. So i been thinking of going to tamu in order to have a better chance of getting a job later on down the road.

My problem is that i heard that tamu is still dealing with alot of racism and prejudice. Im an African male and dont come from a wealthy family so it did concern me on how i would be treated and viewed down there compared to LSU.

It also occured to me the tamu is extremely expensive for out of state students however I am still willing to go there if my abilities to get an internship and a job increases compared to LSU.

I basically support myself completely so i will get the full financial aid for the school and im currently looking for scholarships to help pay for it.

Also how is it like in LSU? socially and academically. And what are my chances of getting a job and internship there compared to LSU? I ask because i always come across boards and internet sources that say Aggies always look out for each other. And i honestly dont know what an aggy is suppose to be other than being from tamu.

Also how are Petroleum engineers fairing in the economy and how is it like to be one. I want to be a Drilling engineer so any information on that will help me greatly.

Are you certain? Because that isn’t true. It is closer to being equal. You need to know a lot of stuff and a lot of people.

Given, I am not a minority around here, but in my time down here, I haven’t really noticed the racism that some people around here like to play up. True, the campus is “whiter” than most other college campuses, but I haven’t run into any overt racism since I have been here. Also consider that the engineering department is much more diverse than the rest of the campus, and as such, foreigners and minorities are generally better represented.

“Aggies” is the name of the sports teams at TAMU as well as a term that refers to basically anyone who goes there. When they say that Aggies look out for each other, what it means is that TAMU has a huge alumni network, and it allegedly isn’t uncommon to get interviews with companies based on the fact that the hiring manager also graduated from TAMU. How true that actually is, I don’t know, but the alumni network truly is enormous.

I can’t really comment on LSU, but petroleum engineers are doing just fine in this economy. They make a huge sum of money right out of school compared to most other jobs that only require a BS degree.

how about internships? I know that without an internship as an engineer in general i would be in big trouble.

I am not a petroleum engineer, but I can’t imagine that PetE acts any differently with regards to internships. Generally, an internship increases your employment prospects probably tenfold. You definitely want to get an internship. I know that petroleum companies recruit heavily for interns at TAMU. No clue about LSU, but I am sure they have their fair share as well.
