Hi, everyone! I'm trying to decide between an acting major and a vocal performance major. If anyone could chime in with their thoughts on either major, it'd be greatly appreciated! I also posted this in the Theater/Drama board, so I'll be getting their opinions, too. Thanks!

What do you want to do after you graduate?

You may want to investigate the MT programs that offer more classical training. My S looked at Oklahoma City U, Baldwin-Wallace, NYU-Steinhardt and Catholic U in Washginton, DC.

I either want to be an actress or a pop singer. Not necessarily famous, because I know there’s a lot of competition, but just do something that I enjoy. I equally love acting and singing. I know that’s not very helpful, but it’s what I know so far.

The lions share of VP programs are geared towards an operatic singing. So you are looking for a popular music program such as those at USC, Belmont or Berklee? The number of programs that teach popular music isextraordinarily limited.

@megpmom - I never actually considered MT, but now that you mention it, that sounds kind of nice.

Another thing I forgot to mention - I was thinking pop music training. Does anyone have info about Catawba? I looked at their site, and it looks good to me, but I wanted some input first.

BTW, I sent you a PM with a link that might be helpful.

MT might be ideal for you, since if I understand it correctly, it has both acting and singing as part of it, which would help with both ends I would assume. VP is classical/operatic, which while there are pop singers who have gone that route (at least reputedly), it is extremely competitive and has a totally different reason behind it.

The popular music option might be good for pop music, but prob wouldn’t do much for acting.

And of course, there is the obvious admission, that acting is like music, they both are extremely difficult to get a foothold in, both of them are a rough course. The only upside to pop music and acting is there are a lot more paths into them then there are in classical music, lot easier for an opera singer to go to pop music then the other way around, there are actors who have gone the acting school route, and actors who started doing something else:)…and of course, same with pop singing.

Thanks, all! I might do a different path that musicamusica brought up, which is major in something else and then take private lessons. I kind of like that idea, but I also think that it’d be harder to get into the industry without an industry showcase. I could be wrong though. Most likely am, but it’s hard to get past my irrational fears.

Getting into a good MT program is extremely difficult and you need to start preparing for it early in high school (schools will look at your r
