Trying to decide between SDSU and UC Davis

Hi.
I’m trying to decide which university to attend. I’m not 100% decided on my major.
I’ve been accepted to SDSU as a business administration major and to UC Davis as an undeclared major.
I am more drawn to the atmosphere at SDSU but am concerned about declaring the business major. Is it difficult to change majors at SDSU? How is the advising and counseling? Are students able to get the classes they need/want? How hard is it to graduate in 4 years? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I had a son at UC Davis and currently one at SDSU but neither is a Business major.

UCD:
No true business major, but Managerial Econ or Econ could be good options depending upon what you want to do with your Business major. Declaring either major is not that difficult but you should look over the curriculum for each to make sure the courses align with your career goals. The Career Center and the Department advisors are very helpful and there are many resources on campus to make you a successful student.

SDSU:
SDSU’s Fowler Business School is very well respected for Business. You are admitted as a Pre-Business major and must meet course and GPA requirements to declare the major and continue with your upper division courses.

Regarding both schools, if you plan your schedule wisely, able to utilize AP/IB or DE credit, be flexible with class times and professors, you should no problem completing your degree in 4 years.

SDSU is far more generous with AP credit than UC Davis, but it also depends upon what AP/IB or DE courses you have taken.

Best of luck.

@fredbarn8 SDSU is gucci for business administration and great location. UC Davis is Gucci for psychology and economics but it’s harder to get into in a rural location. So decide what’s more important for you- major or school selectivity.

I’m a current SDSU student. Major isn’t hard to change at all, unless you’re trying to get into engineering.

I’ve never had trouble with getting the classes I needed. SDSU gives you a date and a time regarding when you can start picking your classes. I always got onto my portal asap to choose my classes.

Who graduates in 4 years and who doesn’t depends on the person. I have a friend who took 2-3 APs in high school and switched their major going into their 2nd year. This set her back greatly and she’ll probably graduate in 5 years. I took 7 AP in high school, and stuck to my major (business). I’m set to graduate a semester early (3.5 years). So, it really just depends on a person’s situation.

Like gumbymom said above, SDSU is better with AP credit and has an outstanding business program. I really love it here, and everyone I know loves it too.

Hey @Gumbymom I’m just curious as to why you think UC Davis is stingy(er) with AP credit. I looked at the UC Davis AP conversion and acceptance charts and it looks pretty decent to me. Berkeley’s AP credits acceptance seemed pretty standard and I would think that UCD’s would be similar. Maybe I’m missing something.

@ProfessorPlum168: It is not that UCD does not give AP Credit, but depending upon major and the AP courses taken, UCD gives more elective credit than credit for GE’s or major prep classes, so a student many times is unable to opt out of specific GE/course requirements. This was also true for a good friend’s daughter whom attended UCSD.

He did get advanced standing which help in getting early registration times which is a policy no longer in effect at UCD.

I did check UCD’s AP credit policy today and it seems there have been some changes since my son attended 5 years ago, so maybe the policy is better for the new in-coming Freshman.

My younger son at SDSU, was able to opt out of 5 classes which included 2 Math courses for his major prep along with 3 GE courses.

@Gumbymom got it. Yeah Berkeley is the same, can’t use AP credits in L&S for his 7 GE Breadth classes. Plus I don’t think the AP credits help with class standing, but his CCC credits helped him get to sophomore level right away. But I think he’ll get credit for every AP class even though some of the credits will wind up being useless.
