I apologize in advanced if this is posted in the wrong section. But I just wanted everyone’s opinions on my neice who wants to go to a four year University like MIT for Engineering.
She currently has a 3.9 GPA and will be able to take an AP Course next year. But she is unsure if she should pursue AP Physics or a different AP course, as she is not sure which will help her for her future in Engineering.
She also wants to take some SAT Subjects tests but she also does not know where to begin or what Subject Test to take.
Would anyone be able to help me guide my neice into the right direction? I need to find out what AP courses she should take and which SAT Subject tests she should prepare for.
In addition to the AP’s mentioned, she could always enroll in a community college course or two- those look great on applications and will allow her more freedom than what her school offers!
As to AP’s, if you are going to pick only one, best would be AP Calculus BC if not already taken because engineering colleges typically like to see that student has accomplished that level of math. AP physics or chemistry would be a second choice.
As to subject tests, be aware that colleges that actually require subject tests ( a small number) or recommend them (not many) often either require or recommend for engineering a math and a science and some of those want math 2 and either physics, chemistry, or biology (although a few just want physics or chemistry; MIT accepts either math 1 or 2 and any of the three sciences), Only two tests are needed for all of those engineering programs that require or recommend subject tests; in fact if you submit three, most will just use the highest two and thus if you already have two high scores in a math and science, a third adds nothing.
A different issue is whether subject tests are needed at all and that depends on where she intends to apply. If she already knows colleges to which she will apply, she should check to see if subject tests are needed, e.g., a number of your higher ranked engineering public colleges will not even use subject tests to determine admission.
Wow! Thank you for all your responses!
I really appreciate this community!
Drusba, do you by chance know the names of the few top engineering colleges that do not even look at subject tests?
I was using the search bar and a big number of threads popped up but its a little hard to sift through!
