So, I’m venezuelan and I have never lived outside my hometown; I’m trying to get need-based full-ride scholarship at EmoryU, and I think I’m only gonna apply there. I’m looking fowards to apply on spring 2021, since right now I’m about to start my 4th year (10th grade in U.S).
In Venezuela, there are no such things as credits and APs. Every class is worth the same and they are evaluated on a scale of 1/20.
I tried to calculate my GPA by dividing my grades by five, that gave a 3.76 GPA. I don’t think that’s good enough since it’s barely above average, but in my country my grades are really good, I’m ranked in the top 20 out of 70 students. To put on context: my average grades in my freshmen year were 18.8/20.
I just wanted to know if that’s good or not, and will it get me in Emory? Also, I have no extracurriculars whatsoever since we only have United Nations Models in my country, and I’m not particularly interested. I just have self-learned music skills.
Are my grades good enough to try to apply to merit-based scholarships? And if any of you know, where can I take the standarized tests? Sorry to bother, I’m just recently entering the U.S college world.
10th grade is early-work on your grades and try to find opportunities to perform some service.
To be honest, it’s going to be a reach. You will need to be at the top among similar applicants in your country.
Another factor you will need to take into account is the current political climate. It will be difficult for you to get a US visa now of any kind from Venezuela and it will so in the near future as long as Maduro is in office.
It’s true, right now in Venezuela we don’t have any U.S Embassy, so my only way to get the F1 Visa would be getting it in Colombia, I think.
Do you know of any other college that gives need-based scholarships to internationals? I haven’t found any that particularly falls into my safety category.
Also, there is no 12th grade here in Venezuela, so I’ve got a year less to figure this out.
Look for a liberal arts college in the US. Many of them will give financial/merit aid to international students.
Helloo,
