I really want to get into the University Of Michigan- Ann Arbor. A lot of kids (I'm not sure exactly how much maybe it's not as much as I think) get there in my school. I'm a sophomore in high school and I didn't do the best I could do in my freshmen/sophomore years (I know a lot of people say this). Some people say I'm doing "good" but, I know I could do better. As of last semester I had a 3.75 gpa and if I do the best I can on my final exams which are next week I'll have a 3.79 gpa at the end of my sophomore year. I'm pretty sure this is low for University of Michigan standards (I'm graduating in 2011).

Anyways I just want honest, truthful information on how I can do better and have a better chance of getting into the University of Michigan. Anything, anything at all that will give me a better chance just tell me!

Here are some things about me:

I'm not into any sports. I would join a sport but, I'm just not a sports person at all and if I did join a sport I would hate every minute of it. Will this ruin my chances?

I did get a black belt in karate.

I'm thinking of getting certification to become a lifeguard.
And I'm also eventually getting certification for CPR.
(I'm not sure if this has anything to do with college I just put it here...)

I have about 65 volunteer hours right now. (It's a little low I'm volunteering a lot during the summer. My goal is to have 200+)

I'm applying for NHS next year.

I'm the president of SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)

and was the freshmen class representative for SADD as well.

I ran for Student Council twice but, didn't get in. I don't think I'm trying again.

I'm in a MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) Committee that organizes a community walk in my city.

I was in a creative problem solving team (DI) for two years (We didn't actually win anything, we got 3rd place at regionals by default). I'm doing it again next year and I'll try to get our team to really place this time.

I attended Science Olympiad (I want to win some kind of medal in this but, haven't yet)

I've played piano for 14 years.

I'm in some clubs: Science Club (does the Science Olympiad) (1 year), Environmental (2 years?), Project LEAD (Volunteering Club) (2 years), SADD (2 years).

I also help with the making of the school literary magazine at my school.

I've heard that it's better to stay focused on a couple of things rather than be in a lot of things and there are a bunch of clubs I only stayed in for a year than lost interest in should I count those when I'm naming the clubs I'm in?

I found an opportunity to volunteer at a medical place over the summer.

I live in Michigan.

My mom's cousin went to the University of Michigan. That doesn't count for anything does it? It's a pretty long stretch across the family tree. (I know him pretty well though)

I've took an SAT course and a couple practice SAT's, I haven't studied much for the SAT otherwise and my score right now is around 1700 (again pretty low). I'm planning to study a lot over the summer though and try to get it over a 2000+.

I haven't worked on the ACT that much so I need to get cracking on that.

I'm planning to take the PSAT in the fall.

One thing that's really been bothering me is that I decided to not take U.S. history at all (you can do that with the new state requirements) I checked with my counselor and everything. But, now I'm regretting it because it's a pretty important class. Will this affect my chances?

I hope the longness of this hasn't put you off. I feel like I haven't done much yet and I'm counting on a lot of things to happen to improve my chances. Please give me your advice on what to do! I want to do ANYTHING possible to get in!
