Trying too hard??

So I was reading through the college chances forum, and I noticed a few people commenting on various threads that it looked like the OP was trying too hard on his/her EC's. So I was wondering, how do you define "trying too hard? And do colleges mind if it looks like you are?

Good question…and I’m sure different people will have a different take on it. To me, “trying to hard” can come across in different ways. Quantity over quality for one. Concentrate your ECs on ones where you really showed commitment, and longevity, and had a true impact. Admissions folk aren’t impressed by a four page “resume” padded with alot of insignificant activities. Self studying for 40 APs is another one. Not necessary. Sending in 11 letters of rec. Not good…and the list goes on.
