Received a call today confirming the admission status from a school where my child applied. We are new to this and my wife thought the notifications all came on March 10 or after, and never by phone. Anyone else have a similar experience? We are baffled.

This is a TSAO school? I am shocked…

I could see this happening if the child was a finalist for a scholarship program (like the Ross at SPS…which is a TSAO) and they were calling to inform of that or to set up interview for scholarship.

The TSAO member schools are:

Choate
Deerfield
Hill
Hotchkiss
Lawrenceville
Loomis Chaffee
Andover
Exeter
St. Paul’s
Taft

The TSAO website is pretty clear about admissions notifications:

You are saying that one of the schools in the list above notified you in violation of this very clear policy? I, too, am shocked.

To clarify…for the Ross, they do NOT tell finalists that they are admitted, but it is assumed by the finalists and their families (why would they bother interviewing people who were not admitted). They are very careful to NOT say that “you are admitted” pre M10 NOR do they ask for any commitment.

@ChoatieMom

From my experience, some of the ten schools (I know at least 2 of them do, for certain) offer “Early Decision” for applicants from my country (if they go through a specific consultant) for yield protection and stuff, so yes, they do violate the policy.

newboarder: Are you an international applicant or using a special consultant? Can anyone else corroborate what MBV says?

I have been contacted multiple times by the Hotchkiss football coach letting me know that he and admissions were thoroughly impressed by my application. He said, “things looked really good” and let me know the benefits of becoming a Bearcat. A couple days ago, I got a postcard from him with the message, “think blue for next year”. While this is by no means a promise of acceptance, it was definitely a good sign. I don’t know if they make exceptions for athletes that they want to secure before other schools can? Hotchkiss is more of a backup school for me, so it didn’t mean all that much, as if I get into Andover and Exeter, I’ll go there. Hope this helps. Good luck to everyone on the 10th

That message certainly meant something

Just, wow…

^^
Wow+1…I don’t think I’ve ever heard of Hotchkiss being a backup school before…

It’s difficult for someone to ‘not read the tea leaves’ when a school sends messages like that a week or two before March 10… In this case, it’s not paintballknee’s dream school, so it hasn’t caused him any distress, but for a kid whose dream school is Hotchkiss, it would be a very big leaf.

@op, newboarder, do you have caller ID? In my experience, calls from my children’s schools always show “school name” in the caller ID.

I am reluctant to believe TSAO school employees are violating their agreement. They could be–or someone else could be trying to determine if you applied.

When I meant backup, I simply meant it’s not my first choice, though I would still be ecstatic to get in or go to Hotchkiss.

Have you actually called the school Admissions Office back? To confirm what you heard? Or was the call from someone you actually know from the Admissions process…?

paintballknee, you might want to delete your comments regarding a specific school. Just in case there are folks there reading these boards- it will not reflect well on you and they should easily deduce who made the posts.

I’m still not quite clear what the op was told-- an admit/deny/WL decision? A confirmation they’d applied? A FA question? Does seem very strange. On the other hand, the Hotchkiss coach’s messages also seem to overstep the boundaries, at least according to what we were told last year-- that coaches, etc. were not to contact you with admissions info between the application deadline and March 10th, although they could talk to you and recruit both before and after these dates.

Sounds like a prisoner’s dilemma.

Because the OP has not returned, I suspect either a) the OP is confused about which schools are TSAO members or b) OP is a ■■■■■ trying to stir things up.

I don’t see a purpose to this thread without further info from the OP who seems to have left.

As I read it, I thought maybe the call was just a confirmation that everything was in process? Status of application could mean a lot of things. We also heard from a non-10 school prior to March 10 - and I have read many similar stories- because the school wanted to give us the option of being on the financial aid wait-list or being admitted as full pay. Some schools are very careful not to admit a student without aid without giving parents a heads up because they want to avoid all the heartbreak that entails - some parents actually prefer to be rejected or wait-listed to being admitted with no aid since they are not in a position to attend without it, and if it is a child’s first or only choice, March 10 can be a misery in this situation.
