TTU Clark Scholars Program (2014)

I’m not sure that they can consider awards given that they didn’t have a place for them in the application :O. I’m sure they’ll look at extracurriculars though.

It definitely seems like they take mostly people with high scores (evident by the high averages in past years). Of course it could be that those who were accepted had the best scores/grades and extracurriculars.

If I have a competition during the program, do you think they’ll let me go? (Of course…assuming that I make it)
It’s June 25-28 so…

Wow they place a lot of weight on your GPA?

What if I have the highest average but my average still isn’t that fly? Will they assume my school is hard (which it’s not, everyone’s just lazy)?

@Holocaust I’m so glad you put down astrophysics! I said physics, but now I regret putting down Chemical Engineering as my second option and think I should’ve said astrophysics as my second option. Though they don’t have an astrophysics department, and idk how prominent their astrophysics is, if at all. But glad to see that others share my interests!

I also applied to RSI, and I got rejected. I didn’t even get an email from them, and had to email Maite to ask :frowning: I had initially felt confident about this application when I sent it in because they didn’t ask for much, but now I’m not so sure if I will get in. I didn’t see any physics faculty from last year, though idk if that reflected the students who got in.

My stats:
Current GPA: 4.40
PSAT: 230
SAT: 2290 (750 reading, 750 math, 790 writing)
ACT: 36 (35 math and science, but 36 English and Reading. However, my essay sucked, so if they look at that, my English score goes down to a 32).
Math II SAT II: 800
Chemistry SAT II: 800
I had been currently working on a research project this year, but I don’t remember if I mentioned that anywhere in my application.

Classes taken/taking (math/science):
AP Calculus BC
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
Honors Physics
Honors Astrophysics
Multivariable Calculus
Differential Equations

Other Classes:
AP US History
AP English Language and Composition
AP Government

ECs:

Science Olympiad - over 500 hours (I calculated it more exactly for the application, but don’t remember how many)
Future Problem Solvers - over 500 hours
Model UN - around 200 hours
Academic Challenge - 30 hours
Math Club - 20 hours

Community Service:

Key Club - 15 hours
Math and Science Tutoring - 50 hours
PAWsibilities Animal Shelter - 17 hours
SAY Leadership Institute - 60 hours

I also helped start the US Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad, but I’m not sure if I mentioned that. There were other more minor ecs and community service things that I don’t know if I mentioned, but this is the gist of it.

Also, as a random note, apply to the Physics for Atomic Nuclei program, for those into nuclear physics. It’s a wonderful program (I’m speaking as an alumni), and it’s free! Just gotta pay for transport :stuck_out_tongue: I learned so much, met new people, and used my experience to help me line up local backup options for summer research! It’s not as selective as these programs, but is decently selective (20%), so I feel a bit more reassured about selective applications.

I also received my confirmation email a few weeks ago, around end of February. So it’s all good

If we get a better SAT score on March 27th, is it any use sending it to the admissions committee?

My current score is 2310 from freshman year.

@spacelover17 I just checked the Physics for Atomic Nuclei Program…it sounds really cool, thanks for sharing it here!
I am planning on applying to it, would you mind answering a couple of questions I have?

Are results coming out 4/1 or later?

Anyone hear anything back from them? Wish it was April!
On the other hand, I forgot if I even received the confirmation email or not… Sigh. Blame me and my crazy love for deleting emails!

This is what I feel like my chances of getting into programs are: 1%>SSP>SIMR>TTU
T_T
@kei04086 I just checked on their website. The results are actually coming out in early May…this is a way longer wait than TASP, SIMR, and SSP. o.o

@fairyfantasy‌ I’m kind of confused on what to do because I need to commit to Garcia by 04/14 but I also want to see results for Clark before I decide…

@kei04086 You should try contacting Garcia about your situation and see if you can delay you decision.

@fairyfantasy‌ I’m afraid they would take back my offer if I do they… after all they have people on the waiting list. Why would they save a spot for someone that might not even go and for whom the program clearly isn’t even his first choice.

@kei04086 Hmm…I can’t help you decide in this case. You will have to decide what your priority is. Garcia is already a really prestigious program to get into, though, and was listed along with Clark Scholars on the MIT blog for suggested high school summer programs. This all depends on how high you think your chances of getting into Clark Scholars is…if you want to go into polymer material research, then it may be the best for you to commit to Garcia.

@fairyfantasy‌ yes I think I’ll most likely just commit to Garcia instead of risking it for some unknown

I saw that the website said early may for the results, but didn’t the confirmation email that they sent out say mid-April? I really hope it’s mid-April, since I have to make plans for other activities in the summer…

has anyone heard back yet?

Nope, I saw on their website they make final decisions in May.
