I am a freshman at Tufts University who is interested in transferring to University of Minnesota- Twin Cities.
I applied early decision to Tufts last year because when I visited the campus it felt like a nice place to live with nice people. However, I have felt lost and lonely, on and off, since the first day. There are points in time when I am completely content with my situation, but there are also periods of time where I am miserable. This is strange, because during high school I never really had this large of a variation in mood.
I have a group of friends who, I think, like me. The problem is that I don't really like them. They are all good people, but they aren't the type of people that I really enjoy and want to hangout with.
Some things that I don't like about Tufts are how insanely preppy many of the kids are and how it seems that so many people believe they are the smartest person on campus. I tried going to a bunch of general interest meetings for various clubs, but haven't found one that I really enjoy or is a community that I really want to be a part of.
My main worry about transferring is that once I transfer it will be the same thing at UMN, except i won't even have my group of "friends" to hang out with. I was thinking that I would try to live in the dorms so that I would meet people, but am not sure if it is hard to get into the dorms as a freshman transfer.
Additionally, while Tufts is generally considered a more prestigious university the program at UMN is much better for my major.
I would appreciate input in any form, with regards to the social or academic situation that I am in.

My DS is a sophomore at Tufts and has some of the same concerns you mentioned. You are not alone in your discomfort. I think that the preppy population is substantial at most expensive selective colleges. As far as finding friends you like, keep trying. It is impossible to say whether it would be better for you at UMN and it is too early to know. You sound like a good person and there are probably people you would like at either school.

thanks for much for the input. Anyone else have any input of any type?
