Tuition Bill Help!

So on my tuition bill, there's a part that says "Pending Financial Aid." What do they mean by pending? And does "Pending Financial Aid" include loans as well? - because all I see under this section are my grants (TAP Estimate, PELL, SEOG). And another thing that's weird about this is that on BIRD, I have much more accepted aid, such as work-study, perkins loan, sub and unsub loans, and a competitiveness grant. However, I don't see any of this on my bill, nor is it deducted from my balance. Does anyone know why?

Call Financial Aid. They’ll know more than anyone here.

Look at the Balance on Account box - it should be the total charges less payments received (ie deposits, scholarships) and pending FA. The FA is listed as pending because UB hasn’t actually received the funds yet. Have you done the mandatory counseling and e-signed your MPN for loans yet? Even though you have accepted them on BIRD, they will not post to your account until you do the paperwork! Work study is money you have to earn and it will be paid to you in the form of a paycheck, not credited to your account.

Like many other schools, UB doesn’t post ACG awards until they actually verify your HS transcripts/eligibility. You could call/email them and find out when that will be and verify that they have your final HS transcript (if you’re a freshman). You can check your balance anytime through MyUB, though credit balances (refunds due to you) will simply show up as 0.

I have done the entrance counseling and e-signed my MPN, but this is only for sub and unsub loans only. I called them yesterday, and they told me my new balance (after deducting the sub and unsub loans), but this new balance is different from what it says on MYUB. So this is one problem I’m trying to figure out - if I choose to pay online, which balance amount do I pay? The amount they told me on the phone, or the amount on MYUB?
I guess another problem is that I have a few more loans, such as the Perkins loan, that I do not think is deducted from my balance yet. I’m going to call again, but thanks for any more advice.

Before you call, take your award letter out and figure out what should be credited toward your bill. Subtract that from the charges and deduct any outside scholarships that were sent directly to UB. That balance is the one they should give you. If not, have them go through it line by line with you so you’ll know what’s missing and they can track it down before next week’s due date…been there, done that x 4!

The NYS budget was finally passed a week or so ago, and state schools had to estimate awards and grants. I believe this is the reason for all the misunderstandings. It will be chaotic the first few weeks. A lot of students eligible for TAP awards are still waiting for formal notifications as well.

Okay, so I called them today, and turns out that I needed to do another MPN and entrance counseling for the Perkins loan. I did that, and I don’t know what my new balance is, although I do know I’m borrowing $900 a year ($450 a semester)? Do I just subtract the $450 from my old balance and pay whatever that amount is, or what?

This is a little bit confusing to me. Do we have to wait for the formal notifications before we pay? Deadline is next week, unless you wanna pay a late fee. If we don’t have to wait for a notification, then that means we’re just paying an estimate, but what if the actual official amount is different from the estimate? Sorry if my question’s a bit confusing, but I’m kinda lost and new to all of this.

UB does have the TAP estimates listed as pending FA on their bills so I think you’re okay there. I would do the Perkins counseling and MPN today and give it a few days to process, then check your balance again. You have until the 24th to pay, TAP and Perkins should be updated by then. HESC has a notice on their website stating that they will notify students of their final TAP awards by 8/20.

As FYI, all TAP awards are being reduced by $75.

I’ve already done the MPN and entrance counseling for the Perkins loan, and it has been a couple of days already. When I tried to check my new balance on MYUB, the balance hasn’t changed and it’s still the same balance as before I did the MPN and entrance counseling. Does anyone know why, or should I call and ask them for my new balance?
