Tuition/Fees Increases Announced

Tuition/Fees for OOS students will increase this Fall by $1,160 (4%) for a total of $29,932 ($41,132 with room/board added). This is the lowest percentage increase since 2005.
For instate students tuition/fees will increase $430 (3.7%) for a total of $12,112 ($23,312 with room/board).
I guess it could have been worse.

I wouuld really like to have my bill to pay. I called the school yesterday and they said next week. Since we had major changes financially, I don’t have a sense of what to expect. I think they should have done a much better job of getting the bills out in a timely manner this year. This is the first time I have been really angry with UD. I guess that’s probably a great track record since D is a rising senior.

I wasn’t expecting anything lower than 4% so I guess I can’t complain. But I agree that it would be nice if the bill was available so I could accurately do my budget for July & August.

Saw this thread and checked online. Bill is posted. I don’t think DD got the email yet about it as she would forward it to me right away. Despite the increase, it’s less painful for me as room and board not included (apt for senior year - yay!).

Question for mwallenmd (or anyone else): DD only planning to take 9 credits in the spring (which is still more than she needs) so suggested to me that we’d save money (yay) by her being considered PT and then we just have to pay per credit. When I called student finance last week, they said a lot of people do this. Any down side? Only thing they mentioned was that DD would have to pay for the gym (if she even ever goes there). Any experience with this?

LINYMOM;
I don’t know of any issues of any significance with your D only taking 9 credits and going PT in the Spring semester (other than having more time to get into mischief with her living in an apartment for the first time at college - LOL!). I would guess you have done this already but anyway I would just recommend you get hotel reservations for graduation. Unfortunately most hotels in the area charge ridiculous amounts for the rooms around graduation time. I hope your D enjoys her Senior year at UD.

We have our hotel reservations already! Thank you for checking though!

DD will have an internship in the spring, probably in Philly if all goes according to plans, so she won’t have as much time for trouble as you might think. I also hope she will be job hunting!!

We have our reservations for graduation weekend, too. I cried when I made them. I just can’t believe how fast the time has gone and how overwhelmingly wonderful it has been. The next thing is to figure out where to have dinner the night of graduation. Any suggestions?

God help me on graduation day. I will disappear into a puddle of tears.

I haven’t tried it yet but the Fair Hill Inn on Telegraph Road (west of Newark) looks perfect for a small gathering. Also, we attended a Mother’s Day brunch at Klondike Kate’s and took note of a private room upstairs. The food was hit-or-miss on the buffet but it would certainly be convenient for a larger party. Finally, I’ve never had a bad meal at the Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant, both in Newark and Lancaster PA. They were hosting some large parties in the dining room on Father’s Day weekend and their reservation system is very good - I’ve never had to wait when I had a reservation.

We were planning on taking our D out to a “fancy” restaurant to celebrate her graduation but deferred when our D told us she had other plans in mind. She had made reservations on friday evening for us to eat at Klondike Kates. This seemed like an odd choice for us initially (we had eaten there a number of times while she was at UD) until she reminded us that it was the first restaurant we had eaten at after she moved in as a freshman 4 years earlier. She felt she wanted to eat her “last meal” as a “student” there because of this. It turned out very nice (the food is OK there). The next day following the graduation exercises she informed us that she and her four roommates/sorority sisters had booked (and paid for) a late afternoon/early evening buffet reception/dinner for all the family members on the second floor outdoor patio at Kildare’s Irish Pub on Main Street. She told us that they all had decided to do this to thank all the family members for their support so that they could attend UD. We thought this was a very thoughtful, considerate, and mature thing for them to do considering it was “their day” (it looks like they grew in many ways while attending UD, which was very gratifying to see). We had a great time interacting (there were about 30-35 of us all together) with one another for one final time as a group before they all went on their separate ways (luckily they have contined to regularly interact with one another since then). The food was excellent so I would recommend this restaurant. Once she returned home temporarily (before leaving to start her first job as a Nurse in Manhattan) we did take her out to a local “fancy” restaurant in order to convey to her in a more sedate setting of how proud we were of her because of all her hard work and accomplishments at UD. Sorry for the length of this but I thought it was an interesting story to convey to all the parents of UD students out there. Good luck to everyone.

Mwallenmd, thank you for the story. It brought tears to my eyes. I can see exactly where your daughter got her generosity of spirit.

Wonderful story. I can’t think that far ahead. Still need to get over launching my baby into his freshman year next month.
