I'm about to transfer to a UC, and there's a tuition cost of a few thousand dollars. I'm coming from a community college and I pay ~40 for each units taken. does the tuition covers the per unit cost or do I pay that on top of tuition?

Tuition is the total cost for course units taken per quarter/semester/year, up to a certain number of units. Aside from class/lab fees, for particular courses, there are no further costs associated with the number of units taken.

What SFS Rules said. You do not pay a per-unit fee on top of the tuition. You only pay a per-unit fee during summer school, which is when you don’t pay for tuition.

so if i’m taking 12 units or 18 units, it would cost the same?

Yes, as long as you don’t exceed the unit cap. If you exceed the cap, then you’ll have to pay for that which is above and beyond what tuition covers.

You’d have to get with your registrar’s office to find out what the cap is (for the quarter/semester/or regular school year).

does anybody know what the unit cap of UC-Riverside is?

I don’t believe you have to pay a fee if you go over the unit cap. You just have to get a waiver to allow yourself to enroll in more classes.

IIRC, units are capped at 17 (?) per quarter and you require permission/waiver to take more. And I remember reading a policy that the student has to cover the unit-cost over the cap… but definitely check with the registrar’s office since they’ll have that information.

If tuition covers the excess units, take the extra classes if you can handle them; but be forewarned that your social life life during that quarter/semester will near non-existent.
