Do you mind sharing your stats? @paigev
I was admitted to the spring semested, its an interesting program if anyone else gets admitted this way dont be upset there was a 25% increase in ED this year http://admission.tulane.edu/spring-scholars/faqs
Mind posting your stats?
I do mind
Has everyone who has heard back a resident of Louisiana?
Did they tell you there was a 25% increase in applications?
I got it by mail and it was a really thin envelope. I have a 1340 superscore sat. I’m taking 6 AP classes my senior year (English 3, English 4, Probability and Statistics, World History, American History, Chem II). I have taken 4 others prior (Human Geography, Government and Politics, Calculus BC, Physics). I am a junior graduating early. I’m from Zachary, Louisiana. My weighted GPA is a 3.9.
hope we find out today at 5 EST time
Congratulations!! The counselor told me the reason for some admittance being for the Spring semester instead of starting in the Fall one is because of how many ED applicants they accepted.@eundertaker8
Does anyone think it’s wrong for Tulane to come out with this Spring admission for ED kids this late in the game? From what I understood- it was not presented as a possibility when kids were deciding where to apply early and those who made the decision to apply ED to Tulane over somewhere else lost there one ED chance and are now faced with a potential Spring admission. I understand that they got more ED applicants than expected but maybe this Spring admission should be offered to kids who applied EA or Regular - not the ED kids.
Agreed. Good point @clementine7624. Perhaps Spring 2019 may still qualify for Fall 2018, just not on an ED basis? Just raising the question, I don’t know the answer.
I think it’s a good opportunity, although they should have made people aware of the chance of being admitted for the Spring instead of the Fall. As for the qualifying for Fall , you are not. You either accept the Spring admission, or don’t.
@Clementine7624 It’s a matter of how you look at it. It’s fair if you consider the alternative to be a denial. These ED candidates are not bound to take Spring admission.
@mbyae23 according to the website, there is no choice. They can take Spring 2019 or nothing.
Other competitive schools are doing this, but Maryland does it the best. They actually allow students to begin in the fall, get housing, but restrict courses to those offered after 3 pm.
There are two reasons schools do this. One is the lack of space and the other is that they don’t have to count admissions statistics such as GPA and scores on ACT/SATs among those for new class. It is still a way to accommodate candidates who really want to go to a certain university who miss the cut, but are capable of doing the work. If you think it’s wrong for schools to do this, then consider the alternatives which is just outright rejecting students.
Consider the alternative: If the Spring admit option didn’t exist, the ED applicants who receive this offer would almost certainly be denied (or deferred to RD) – likewise “losing” their one ED chance.
It happened last year, so why would this policy be wrong or surprising?
@LuckyCharms913 I wasnt aware they did this last year. My friend whose child is applying visited campus, researched it, did alumni interview etc - was never told this was a possibility. Today on the admissions blog appeared a Q and A about spring admission which was the first they learned of it.
I think the point is that it should have been disclosed so that students could make that as part of an overall evaluation as to where to use their ED application.
I thought they offered the Spring admissions last year to make up to the students that were accidentally sent admission letters?
