@mrjsmom Thank you so much! I’ve definitely learned a lot through this process, and while some of those lessons haven’t been fun, I have no doubt they’ll help me later on in life. It’s really sweet that you feel protective of the kids on CC – sometimes I think some of the parents (and other students!) on here are too quick to view us as competition rather than as the human beings that, at the end of the day, we all are. I am grateful to have a wonderful option waiting for me at Virginia Tech, so while Tulane’s decision stung a little bit, I’m gonna be A-okay and hope that everyone else on here will be able to say the same. Thanks for your kind words!
Another waitlisted with significant interest in Tulane. Did not apply due to the free app, but because of the emphasis Tulane has always had on volunteering and making a difference in the community. Sad to not be able to be part of that. 36 ACT, 5’s on all but 1 AP, and 4.7 GPA, 2 year round sports, scouts. The take away is to make a difference somewhere else and be a positive force for change wherever we land. Great options elsewhere, but still a disappointment.
did anyone else receive guaranteed transfer like I did?
Did anyone get accepted?
Yes I received guaranteed transfer. I didn’t even know that was a possibility for colleges to do. I am shook!
I got guaranteed transfer as well. Kinda surprised and confused. Does anyone know if we can count AP credit towards the community college we go to for a year and then only take like 1 or 2 classes. If I can do that I might. What are others thinking of this
To give some comparison I will mention some other college outcomes:
Northeastern: Accepted
Babson: Waitlisted
Bentley: Accepted
4.1/4.5 GPA
Very strong extracurriculars
Job experience
Low SAT: 1340
Top 10% of the class
I’m not sure it seems like it’s something new they are enacting this year so there is not a single bit of information on it… I almost feel as if they are offering this to me because they don’t want to report my test scores but want my money lol
To all of you you that think that Tulane cares about yield because of rankings…yield does not affect rankings(at least the ones that matter like US News). They care about yield because they have to be sure that they have room for the incoming class. The number of applications that most competitive schools are receiving these days grows substantially every year. So waitlisting students is a way to manage the incoming class. Schools like Tulane simply can’t admit every single student with a 34 or higher ACT because there are way too many. The difference between a 32 and a 34 ACT is only a handful of questions, and same thing when comparing a 34 to a 36. There is way more to an application than that one test metric. The good news is that if you have a high ACT you probably have plenty of other options so no need to be sour grapes.
Waitlisted
GPA: 3.59 W
ACT: 28
One AP test (4 on English language)
My essays were great though. I’m excited! My stats aren’t great so I wasn’t surprised when I got deferred early action, but this is a nice surprise!
Waitlisted…and this was a throw-away safety school application. I guess there is a lesson in there somewhere.
Waitlisted…
kinda shocked bc just got into Colby and waitlisted Bowdoin but whatever
applied as saftey
1470 SAT
4.2 GPA
very strong EC’s
asian american
was deferred EA and waitlisted RD
GPA: 3.83 W and around 3.74 UW
SAT: 1430 / 690 (reading/writing)+ 740 (math)
I don’t know whether this helps for all waitlisted applicants. Please don’t despair. My son in 2014 was waitlisted in Tulane but he was accepted to CWRU, UMich, Wash U and U of Rochester. I am positive that all of you will join some school what you will love. Good luck.
For those of you feeling bad about being waitlisted, dont. this was a tough year. 38500 applications, record number. 6700 admitted, down 800 this year. 17% admit rate this year puts it with ND, WashU, Georgetown USC. My daughter was waitlisted, Good candidate with 34ACT, 4.3 W gpa, NHS, two sport varsity, volunteer work, etc etc. though she demonstrated no interest which probably cost her. Her priority were northern schools like UR, Tufts, NW and NE. 2 of which shes already been admitted to.
Tulane is not a “throw-away safety school”.
This year it seems they took a lot ED and EA, so it seems the RD applicants were at a disadvantage.
Waitlisted
3.9 weighted GPA (not sure unweighted, but I know its above a 3.5), 1430 SAT, 10 AP classes, asking for financial aid
Do you guys think I’ll make it to enrollment?
Odd that these unhappy decisions have come out but acceptances have not? Maybe those are in snail mail?
Yes, @jym626 anyone who noticed the large number of kids accepted ED and EA and the significant and enthusiastic attendance at the various events on campus for those students probably isn’t surprised that the number of RD slots is not large.
In the last 2 years my D’s school had 74 applicants with a 26% acceptance rate. I can assure you that after this year the number of applications from our school will go down. They actually got some really smart kids from our HS because they gave them a lot of money. Going forward, those caliber of students are unlikely to apply. I know my next D will not apply there. Looks like a new business model for Tulane.
There are many facets to any school’s admissions policy. To base a decision next year on what a schools admissions rate was this year seems unwise.
