Tulane Students Offer to Answer Questions

@phollowayokc - I have had the opportunity to live in the great city of New Orleans for the past 4 years (as a TU student). Below is my honest opinion about the safety/security I feel as a student at Tulane:

In terms of on campus safety, I have never felt unsafe walking through campus. Obviously, Tulane has a large number of resources in place to ensure the safety of their students on campus. Between the blue light system, 80+ TUPD officers patrolling campus, and a ‘virtual safety escort’ service Tulane provides its students with superior safety/security!

In terms of off-campus safety, Tulane is located in a city and therefore has its ‘city problems’ like all other cities. My sister went to NYU and I remember my parents always told her to walk in groups. I think most people would say the same about New Orleans. Although I have never personally been in a situation that would cause me to feel unsafe off campus, I ensure that I am being smart and aware of my surroundings. Tulane students will get alerts about crime that takes place off campus; it’s inevitable when you live in a city. The Tulane Police Department monitors a mile radius off campus as well, which means that the majority of off-campus residents still will see TUPD (along with NOPD) patrolling their streets. Off-campus students also love using TapRides which is a free ‘uber type service’ for Tulane students. This service allows TU students to request a ride back to their home/dorm/campus if they do not feel like walking back or taking a cab back.

I do not want to say that NOLA is crime-proof, because it is not. Fortunately, Tulane’s priority is the safety of its students and this can be seen through all of the amazing resources they offer. Tulane does an excellent job at taking a very proactive approach when it comes to the safety of its students. There is crime/homicide in New Orleans, which is why Tulane takes the safety of its students extremely seriously.

Hi Maddie. My DD just got accepted as an incoming Freshman. One of the things on her list of attributes that she wants in a school are students who are involved in athletics and go to the football games, etc. Is there a lot of attendance at the games? Pep rally’s and things like that?

@TulaneMaddie22 do I have to accept the offer of admission to sign up for housing? Or can I sign up for housing before I accept?

@ZBlue17 You have to accept admission first. Housing decisions aren’t made until June so it won’t put you at any kind of disadvantage.

@tracib During my sophomore year Yulman stadium opened on campus (we used to play all of our games at the super dome) and I think that has definitely improved attendance at our games. The tailgates happen right on the main quad of our school and are a lot of fun. I wouldn’t say that Tulane is necessarily a football school, it’s definitely going to be more low key than what you would find at an SEC school. BUT we are a DI school and I think interest is always growing as our program gets better.

Would admissions have any problem with me dropping AP Calc AB? (I have already been accepted)

I have a low C now, would they prefer to see an A or height B in a regular calc class?

@2012hopeful - this is just my opinion, but as long as you can maintain the C and you think that you might possibly get the AP credit, I would stick with it. Calc is hard. As long as this is your only C, it will not affect your admissions. Also, depending on your major, getting the AP credit might mean that you do not have to take Calc at Tulane.

@jozuko Yea …it should be my only C (unless Lit falls a lot more)

Do you know if tulane wants mid-year reports from accepted students? common app page only says the final transcript is required

@2021Hopeful I agree with @jozuko. And no Tulane doesn’t need mid-year reports!

@TulaneMaddie22 Phew. That’s a relief. I at least have a chance to get my calc grade up to a B (or try to …)

Since they only see final senior grades, it is safe to say that even if I did end with 1 or 2 Cs, they wouldn’t rescind, right? Tulane wouldn’t wanna ruin students’ college prospects like that

@2021Hopeful -relax. just do your best. As long as you do not suddenly become a complete slacker your acceptance is safe.

I hate asking this with everything going on right now, but is what people are saying about people getting deferred simply because admissions didn’t have time to get to their EA application true?

I doubt it.

@DangerDoctor Definitely not. Every application is read by the admission counselors and given a fair chance.

Hey, I am an incoming freshman and am a bit curious about what would be the right dorm for me. I do plan on being social and partying as well as going to the Boot quite often, but, I don’t want it to dominate my life and don’t plan on going Greek.

I plan on joining the radio when I get to Tulane, and would also like to live with more creative, artsy people, but generally just want to be with the nicest least stick up people. I’d also like to be close with the people in my residence and don’t want to stay in a place that isn’t very sociable, as I am a very sociable and active person.

Does you have insight on what housing option you believe would suit me best, and/or your experiences with particular housings? Thanks so much.

When does Tulane release the Financial aid package for EA applicants? Is it all at one time on a set date? I’m guessing earlier than RD applicants since the real one to submit FAFSA & the CSS profile was Dec 15…

Ughhhh all the spelling errors in my post are making me cringe haha.

@ZBlue17 - They release them in February, so it has to be before the RD applicants (who haven’t even been notified of their acceptance by that time).

@mkat12 - I posted this on another thread…check out the dorm videos here:

If we have been deferred from Tulane, are we out of consideration from the Paul Tulane award now or not?
