@gogogogobruins - I’m sure that TulaneMaddi will be back. It’s Mardi Gras, so most students have been pretty busy. There were midterms a week or so ago and now the big Mardi Gras weekend, with classes canceled Monday and Tuesday (only at Tulane…only in New Orleans!)
@TulaneMaddie22 Do you know of anyone who has graduated in less than 4 years due to bringing in enough credits through dual enrollment in high school or AP credits?
@threebeans my son is graduating a year early. He had a lot of AP and college credits coming in but he still worked his ass off for the past three years and took one summer class after his freshman year. Last summer he did an internship for credit. He has a double major in Political Science and Philosophy. He took at least 18 credits each semester and took 22 one semester.
@TulaneMaddie22 Were you at the Tulane presentation in Austin TX this year? Think we met you!
@TulaneMaddie22 … or others
Hello. Do you know if the last Tulane yearbook published (Jambalaya) was in 2008? It is the last one on the web archive.
What is the spirit amongst the student body like? Also, is the weather unbearable?
@DavidPuddy -Looks like this thread has been abandoned for a while. Maddie must have graduated. (Congrats, Maddie!)
But I can probably answer your question. I am a Tulane parent and for the past year I have been bombarded with emails (and at least a couple snail mails), urging me to buy a Tulane yearbook. Apparently the once-defunct (as you have noted) Jambalya, has made a comeback: http://tulane.edu/jambalaya-makes-comeback
The amount of notification I’ve received as a result has become laughable. My son (about to be a junior) loves Tulane but isn’t the least bit interested in a yearbook. I’m sure that, for some folks, a yearbook has a place in the universe, but with so much access to friends, campus organizations, etc. via Facebook and other social media, there are certainly many ways find similar information more rapidly and for free.
But even in my own era many moons ago (I graduated from high school in 1969 and from college in 1973), the yearbook was a big deal in high school and, for me, not any kind of deal at all in college. I didn’t even bother to submit a photo for it.
@dcgirl15 -Since Maddie is gone, I’ll ask the admission folks if another student can pinch hit. In the meantime, I’ll try to answer your questions.
Re spirit: I would describe the student body as very spirited. Well, admittedly, when it comes to sports events, we’re not talking Alabama or Ohio State here. For instance, Tulane students are more likely to attend the tailgates that precede all the home football games than they are to attend the games themselves (or they’ll leave before the game has ended unless it’s a nail-biter). But I have spent a lot of time on campus, and the campus always seems buzzing with activity and enthusiasm … as much (or more so) than any other college I’ve seen (which is several hundred by now).
In fact, when my son was taking his college tours a few years ago, he noticed this level of activity right away, pointing out that students at Tulane seemed to walk around in pairs or small groups talking animatedly to each other, while at Rice (which he saw a couple days later), they tended to walk alone wearing ear buds. I had noticed the same thing myself, though I was kind of surprised that he honed in on it, too, and without me saying anything.
As for the weather, my son would tell you that it’s great. Being from New England, he loves getting through the winter wearing no more than a hoodie. Sure, there are some crazy cloudbursts that make it wise for students to carry a sweatshirt … and even a dry shirt, too … in their backpacks to avoid freezing to death in the air conditioning should a quick storm come up on the way to class. And the heat in late August and September can be brutal for those not accustomed to it (but all the buildings are well cooled and there’s even an outdoor “social” pool for those who want to take a dip.)
But my son chose Tulane for many reasons, and weather was definitely on the list. He certainly wouldn’t call it "unbearable’ and I’m sure he’d take a thunderstorm over a blizzard any day! His freshman year, he came home to MA for October break and it snowed. He couldn’t wait to get back to New Orleans!
Thank you so much, this was very helpful!!
@dcgirl15 -You’re very welcome. Keep asking questions here, and if we parents who are lurking around can’t answer them, I’ll ask my son or will try to scare up another student to check in regularly.
There is also an enormous amount of information on other Tulane threads, courtesy of the late David Krost, aka “Fallen Chemist.” He was a very loyal Tulane alum (and parent of a recent grad) who died suddenly not quite a year ago. He provided an amazing amount of information (and moral support) to prospective Tulane students and their families. So if you have specific questions, you can search the Tulane forum to see if anyone–particularly Fallen Chemist–has already answered them.
There have been some changes just in the past year or so, especially concerning housing and also the honors program, but, overall, the Tulane forum contains tons of potentially very valuable assistance that was largely provided by Fallen Chemist.
@Sally_Rubenstone, I’d be happy to help as well (my son graduated in May) and it looks like @dolphinlvr6 is still here too. Perhaps we should start a new thread. I will email Jeff Schiffman and request that he find new recruits to replace Tulane Maddie and Tulane Barry.
@jozuko - I think that starting a new thread is a good idea, but let’s wait to see how Jeff responds to your request for a new student intern or volunteer to answer questions. The student he appoints will probably want to start his/her own thread.
Jeff is good about this stuff and will probably jump right on it as soon as he can. He also answers questions himself on CC from time to time, as I’m sure you’ve seen.
Congrats on your son’s graduation!
Yep I’m still here. My son graduated in May and is starting Tulane Law TOMORROW! They offered him a scholarship t he couldn’t turn down!
@dolphnlvr6 -Congrats! I’m excited for him … and for you. I wish your son all the best, and I envy you getting to be a Tulane mom for at least another three years.
I am a former New Orleanian - and graduated from Tulane Law school. My DS18 is applying! He visited and really liked it & has of course visited NOLA several times. Hopefully some current Tulanians will host a thread but nice to see parents jumping in.
@Sally_Rubenstone and @dolphinvr6, I heard back from Jeff and as suspected, both Tulane Maddie and Tulane Barry have graduated. Now that school is starting up again, Jeff will recruit a new intern or two to join us here on CC to assist with questions. In the meantime, new parents and students…feel free to ask questions and we will do our best to answer them for you!
@jozuko -Thanks for contacting Jeff. He’s in the throes of Greenie Camp right now but I’m sure he’ll dig up an intern or two for CC when he can.
@CA1543 -So nice that your son may continue the family tradition at Tulane. You should definitely encourage him to post questions here, and he should also feel free to email his regional admissions rep. Occasional questions–especially those that aren’t easily answered on the Tulane Web site (etc.)–are always fine to send and can help to demonstrate your son’s interest. Of course, an onslaught of questions sent to the busy reps might not have quite the same effect.
As the parent of an admitted student for the 2018-19 school year, I’ve found this thread very helpful! Thank you to all who have responded so far Did Jeff ever ask another student to jump in here and start a new thread? If so, I’d love to get a link to it. Thanks!
@startingsoon -Congratulations on your child’s acceptance! There is a Tulane student who was appointed by @TulaneJeff to answer questions back in the late fall, and I have seen his responses pop up on different threads in the Tulane forum as recently as this morning. His user name is “HazelnutorFootball.” So if you have a question that you think might be in his wheelhouse (he is a current Tulane junior), you can put your question in the thread where you think it fits best and then call it to his attention by adding “@HazelnutorFootball.”
Did you also know that there is a Facebook group for Tulane parents? (It’s for all Tulane parents … not broken down by their student’s year of entry or graduation.) If you are a FB member and haven’t found it yet, you should be able to search for it under “Groups” and then submit a request to join. I’m not sure if parents of rising freshmen are being okayed yet, but that will happen soon enough. Once your child enrolls, many of the questions that pop into your head (or keep you awake at night ) are ones that other parents have already handled. So admission folks may no longer have the answers you need but the parents will.
Good afternoon everyone! My name is Justin, and I’m a Masters student in our Biomedical Engineering program here at Tulane. I also work in the admissions office, am involved with greek life, community service, on-and-off campus research, and several other organizations!
I’m super excited to answer any questions you all may have about the process and our experiences!
Roll Wave!
