So after all of my final decisions, it has come down to these three schools. I am going premed (and would like to also do something with business) and money isn’t really a problem.
Tulane: I am in the Honors College, and I received a 30k per year scholarship.
I can only comment on Tulane. What sold my daughter on the program (one of many) was the flexibility between colleges. You can do premed related course AND business easily because you don’t have to apply to the separate business program - you can take any program in ant of the schools.
Mich is huge and Tulane is small - so very different types of environments. I would think UMich would be more cut-throat in the pre-med department and of course the goal is the get the highest GPA possible.
I don’t know anything about ND.
You are very fortunate to have such great options! Good luck.
Agree with @3mamagirls and would add that Tulane does have the benefit (not sure of exact criteria) of automatic admit to the medical school, which is very unique among top national universities. As great as Michigan might be, I also agree that it would be very intense and competitive in that space (not necessarily a bad thing). And $30K / year ??? Congrats, save your money for medical school!!!
@dunnowheretogo I agree with what @3mamagirls and @cst467 say above, except I am not sure about whether there is an automatic admit to the medical school, you’ll have to check on that. But you need to visit each school one more time for admitted students day if you are still unsure. And if after visiting you are still not sure, then I think you should pick the one that is the least cost to you and your family even if you can afford all three. I’ve given you my opinion on the thread you created (Tulane or UMich Premed or Business) in the College Search and Selection thread. And you’ve gotten a lot of comments in the Michigan thread you created. The answers you get on this forum will obviously be partial to Tulane. You should also post this question separately on the Notre Dame forum, as you will get different views based on each forum. But bottom line—you need to make the decision yourself because everyone else will have a different view. At some point you need to say I’ve heard enough and then make your own decision based on how YOU feel—comfort and fit—upon visiting each school one more time to decide.
There are a couple of “direct admit” medical programs at Tulane, but they are pretty small and have very strict requirements. The two I’m vaguely familiar with are Creative Scholars (apply during your soph year), and a new TPM program, that is open to incoming freshmen, but the application deadline has passed and the interviews are in progress now. That being said you definitely have some advantage being a Tulane undergrad trying to get in Tulane Medical school (assuming your grades, MCAT and other requirements are in order).
@dunnowheretogo I agree with what @trackmbe3 said – you need to visit and find your personal fit. Notre Dame is more conservative, over 75% Catholic, and all single sex dorms, no Greek system (to name a few attributes). Tulane are all co-ed dorms except for one dorm. Notre Dame is in the South Bend, IN, Tulane is in New Orleans – big differences in weather and overall culture. ND big into football, Tulane not so much. Tulane probably has more accessible research opportunities, but ND has one of the strongest alumni networks I’ve seen. I could go on and on, and I’m not saying one is better than the other because they were the #1 and #2 schools for my DS. I don’t know anything about UMich.
