Thanks for your information. So this year do you have still other kids that going to Austin CS?
Yes. My son was accepted and is waiting on Turing, CSB and decisions from Ivies, MIT, CMU, Caltech. Accepted also to TAMU, UMass Amherst w/scholarship, and UIUC. Deferred from Ga Tech and Stanford.
do we wait till 7:30? I don’t think they send after that time right?
My daughter got into Turing as an OOS (CA). She also has an acceptance from Caltech and is deferred from MIT (waiting for that). Right now her top choice is Caltech, but based on yesterday’s goto Turing event, she liked the program very much and looking to exlore and learn more about it. Any insights??
Is it a YouTube recording for the event available ? Also can you share how to get the in state tuition for OOS? They mentioned on the event. Thanks
Turing has the pace and rigor that is on par with schools like MIT, CMU, etc. it is a top notch program. Where my niece said they went wrong is with diversity. There are constraints due to in state admissions, but Turing is nowhere near as diverse as Caltech and MIT. Those schools do have more latitude to adjust their student body composition though. Education wise Turing is on par with those top programs.
She didn’t attend OOS event, she preferred to stay in “gather” and connect with some Turing seniors to understand more about the program itself. Some they made it confidential, not sure if they will post it in Youtube. I found some info in UT website if that helps you,
I agree about the diversity. We visited Caltech campus over the winter break, she was guided through by a friend to different buildings. Still have the in-person admitted students event to attend. We are keeping UT Turing as her second choice at this point in time. BTW, your son seem to be very competitive kid, I’m sure he’ll bag one or two of the T10s in RD cycle. Thanks for the info.
Likewise your daughter seems special as getting into Caltech is not easy at all! Congratulations!
The stereotype with Turing is that there is a bias towards kids who do USACO and diversity becomes an afterthought. I get the sense they are changing that this year. Which is great!
Mine is nowhere in the USACO segment (not a competitive coder). She has done competition math and math research. CS interest just bubbled up in her senior year and she took it as a hobby to teach and code herself.
Indeed. I’m glad they are trying to pick students with different backgrounds. Mine has coding competitions, CodeWars, and the team he leads placed top 25 nationally out of 600 in an up and coming CS class at his HS (rural outskirts of Houston). They started their coding competition ways from scratch and are aiming for top 10 this year. His essays focused a lot on leadership, helping to grow interest in CS at his HS, etc.
Maybe they changed this year. My son has USACO and AIME but still waiting for Turing
Multiple usaco golds were rejected so I don’t think it’s only that
Exactly my point. The formula is changing this year.
Thank you for this info. Really helps to decide if UT CS is still a contender.
Any updates?
Still under review ://
Today regular admissions will be released as well.
Here is the link to obtaining Texas residency for tuition purposes:
https://admissions.utexas.edu/residency
We are part way through the process now with S21. The link for out of state tuition waivers provided is possible for Freshman year, but it’s a very very competitive scholarship. Definitely apply, but don’t count on it. The residency path is not competitive, it simply requires meeting all the requirements. In addition to the Turing presentation last year, I have communicated with many parents of older longhorns to confirm that all who met the requirements have obtained residency. Additionally, the residency office is there to help and answer questions.
Thank you for the information . I heard that to get the residency from the 2nd year, the kid will need to live out of campus for 1st year to approve 12 months requirements in order to be qualified for in state from 2nd year? We are not considering the tuition waver option as it is very competitive
