Turning down admission offer after accepting it

Hi,
So I got accepted at Smith as a transfer, but they want me to reply by May 1st. However, Wellesley is my number one choice, and they send out decisions mid May. I dont want to turn down Smith because if I dont get into Wellesley that's where I'd be going, but at the same time I don't want to be forced to go to Smith because of a deadline. I was thinking about paying the deposit at Smith and then later withdrawing it if I get acccepted at Wellesley, but some friends told me that Wellesley could penalize me for that if they found out (which I have no idea how, but it is making me worry anyway).
Any responses would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

They won’t penalize you. What you’re planning is perfectly rational.

It’s a pretty standard occurrence for transfer students and wait-listed students. Colleges want decisions by May 1st but most transfer/waitlist decisions don’t come out until later. They will understand (and enjoy your non-refundable enrollment fee).

… and will gladly give your spot to another waitlisted student. No loss on their part.

This is fine. It happens with all wait-listed students and many transfers. Smith won’t refund your deposit if you get into Wellesley, though.
