Did anyone else turn down Dartmouth for another school and why? I turned it down for USC because it was closer to my family and I felt I'd have more opportunities both in and out of college.

Why is this thread relevant? Are you trying to justify your decision to turn down Dartmouth?

To answer your question, the people who turn down Dartmouth tend to do so for other ivies and ivy-caliber schools. Even then, Dartmouth wins over 50% of cross-admits with many of those schools.

Your situation, however, is different. Very few people turn down Dartmouth for USC, but you have your reasons – and that’s fine. Recall why you made your decision, and don’t look back. It’s too late to change anything, so look forward, not backward.

Oh, I guess I put this in the wrong category. I don’t regret it or feel bad about it since I’m opening up my spot to someone who really wants it, it was just a curiosity. I’ll take it down though.

I don’t think this thread is misplaced or anything. If you honestly were curious about some other people who turned down Dartmouth and their reasons, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.

And no, I’m not saying that just because I’m on the waitlist and you just freed up a spot ;)

This thread was not misplaced. Why is it wrong for superconfused to want to hear from other kids their reasons?

I ultimately turned down Dartmouth for Princeton. It was a much much much harder decision than it looks. I think a prospective Dartmouth students should really go to Dimensions because it totally changed my perceptions of the school. Dartmouth imo is a school that has a lot of intangibles that can only be experience by a visit. The laid back atmosphere and the amount of school pride/love dartmouth has is just insane. I was torn by this decision up until the morning of May 1st. Even then, it very close and choosing a princeton was me just being a prestige whore. I already have a few regrets lol but I’m trying not to look back.

^I’ve seen that a lot. Kids get into a “higher” tier ivy league, and truly, the moment they get into Princeton or Yale, their decision is made. Even after visiting, everything points to Dartmouth being a better match, but the built of reputation of these other ivies is what they buy.

My apologies. My initial reading of the posed question led me to interpret it as the OP attempting to justify his or her decision to decline Dartmouth’s offer of admission, which is a futile activity.

I turned it down for Columbia, I did not like the environment at Dartmouth

I love this thread. We (waitlisted students) now know that there are at least three spots… if darmouth decides to fill them.

I turned down Dartmouth for another school, for financial aid and other reasons.

I have a friend who turned down Dartmouth for UC Berkeley because he just likes Berkeley better.

I very bitterly turned down Dartmouth for Wharton LSM. I love the Dartmouth environment, but a dual degree from Penn was too good to pass up.

The main turn off I had of Dartmouth was the prevalent Greek life, but I chose Dartmouth anyway (can’t expect a school to be perfect)! I have a friend who felt Dartmouth wasn’t as pre-professional as Duke (probably because of the large party scene), and chose Duke over Dartmouth. Also, Hanover weather could turn people off as well, though if you can’t handle a bit of precipitation, you’re not ready for the real world.

I turned down Dartmouth for MIT. I wasn’t really too into Dartmouth anyway. Nevertheless, after going to MIT’s preview weekend, it was pretty much the only school I wanted to go to, though Harvard remained in the running on account of their generous FinAid.

Having been WL’d elsewhere, I know it sucks. Best of luck to you guys!

Haha all I can say is thanks guys for opening up spots on the waitlist. :D

wow…well i guess turning down dartmouth was not the best move for me! but i’m glad i was at least able to open up a spot for someone who really wanted to go there. :)
