Would it be horrendous....

to turn down UChicago, Dartmouth, Emory, and Vanderbilt to go to USC? I feel really bad about turning down the first two, especially because I worked so hard in high school to have opportunities like that. I mean I'm still not sure where I'm gonna go, but every time I think of going to USC I feel like I'm lowering my standards because I have better opportunities. I just think all of the pressure to go to USC from my mom, my sister, my grandma, my grandpa, my sister's friends, my own friends, etc. has completely turned me off from the school, but I think I might have actually liked it and I might like it if people had, have, and will just BACK OFF. I just don't know anymore, and I'm lost.

No, it wouldn’t be horrendous but it would be if you were only going there to please others.
Do you really prefer it over the other schools? Is money an issue? What’s your major? Is the program offered at USC better than the others?

It’s not horrendous, but make sure YOU like it and aren’t just going because of pressure from friends/family. What do you like about USC and what are your interests? It’s best to go to the school you’d be happiest at, and if that’s USC, you should go there. Unless there’s particular financial issues. Don’t go to any of the schools only out of where you think you’re supposed to go, because you could be taking the spot away from someone whose dream school is dartmouth for example. idk. Can you talk to people at usc and the other schools ?

I know it would be horrible to please others and not myself so I’m trying to avoid that but I feel like I just can’t make a decision and I keep getting pushed to go to USC everyday where I’m almost to the point where I just wanna be like OK FINE I’LL GO TO USC!!! But it’s also like am I pushing it away so much because other people want it for me so badly? It’s just so conflicting. Money’s definitely not an issue as USC was the only school still left on my choices of colleges that gave me money. I have no idea what I’m going to major in, but I like the fact that it’s large but intimate and it’s in a major city but has a traditional campus. I like the balance, I just wish it was in the east coast and not called USC so people would stop bugging me about it.

anyone else? sorry, i kno my post are annoying but you guys have the best advice!!!

Hey, I guess I’m wondering why they are pushing you to USC? USC is a great school but I feel as if its one of those schools that has high awareness, but in the long run among people who are going to have the largest impact on your future the others are much stronger (outside of USC film school). They will offer amazing study abroad opportunities, grants, research, alumni networks, and communities. And it shows when you look at people making an impact- whether its in the White House administration or among hedge fund traders. In the end you’re going to get a far more intimate college education at the others and you’ll have access to stronger opportunities. Why is your family pushing USC, are you from California?

No, I’m from Las Vegas, but I guess my family just sees USC as this just like wonderful school. I think they are just oblivious of any other schools, like they see UChicago or Dartmouth the same as like University of Washington or some school like that. Like my grandma wants me to go there so she can ride a bus to see me and so that I can come back and visit more often but she just doesn’t understand that no matter where I go, Cali or New Hampshire, I won’t be coming back that often because of studies and stuff. But I mean it doesn’t really what school I go to, because as long as I work hard, I can do whatever I want to do, right?

I mean if you want to live in LA after college then USC is going to be a fine choice. If you work hard you can shine there as well, and maybe it will be good to be close to family. One thing about the Dartmouth, Duke, Chicago, and Amherst’s of the world is they will expose you to things you might not otherwise be aware of. But those roads likely lead to the east coast generally. Do you know what you want to do after school?

I think that you should pick one of the other schools and broaden your horizons!

Sorry I didn’t read all the responses… but why do your parents want you to go to USC and not one of the other two. If you truly love USC, it would not be horrendous at all.

Can you say what features you like about each of the schools?

Make a list of features that are important to you and rank each school according to those features.

…Emory…Dartmouth…USC
Academics…Insert your rankings here
Weather…OK…yucky…great
Strength in Major…?..?..?
Cost…?..?..?

When you try to write it all down, maybe it will help you and your family see what’s really best for you.

Good luck.
