There is another thread asking students about which school they turned Michigan down for. This thread does the opposite; which universities did you turn down for Michigan?

Chicago, Columbia

Brown, Stanford, Smith, American, Wayne State

Berkeley, Harvard, UCLA, UVa

For those who turned down HYPSM, why?

S is turning down CMU, Georgia tech and UT austin.

Carnegie Mellon (costs exactly 3 times as much as Mich for me)

Villanova, UWash, OSU, IU, UMD

Cornell UIUC

Purdue, TAMU, UIUC

International student enrolling in the MPP at the Ford School this fall.

Turned down Harvard, Syracuse, and GWU.

First choice was Harvard’s Kennedy School, but that would have cost almost twice as much as U-M. Syracuse and GWU would have cost a lot less though as I was offered full tuition waiver. Did I make the right choice?

Although I did not turn HYPSM in favor of Michigan personally, while a student in Michigan in the mid 90s, I knew dozens of students who did. I did not know them all well enough to discuss their reasons, but I must have discussed the point with several. Three quarters of them did so purely out of financial motivation. Attending Michigan meant saving a considerable amount money. However, I remember meeting a handful (4 to be exact) of OOS/international students who paid full price to attend Michigan and chose it because it was a much better fit for them. All 4 ended up eventually getting their graduate degrees from Harvard (1 in medicine and 1 PhD in Economics), Yale (1 to Law) or MIT (1 PhD in Engineering). Clearly, going to Michigan did not slow them down and they do not regret their decision. Now I only knew a limited number of students at Michigan (over four years, fewer than 200 out of 24,000 undergrads). You would be surprised how many more made similar decisions, be it for financial or personal reasons.

I turned down Chicago, Johns Hopkins

Turned down Villanova, Northeastern, UMass Amherst, UVM, Penn State, and Fairfield.

turned down Florida, Miami, Loyola Chicago, Boston U, and Aquinas (MI). Despite that list, I am actually an in-stater! :)

UVa, UT Plan 2, Penn State. There is a thread elsewhere here, where I discussed that D really struggled between UT Plan 2 and Michigan honors. But she now feels great about her decision.

UM-Dearborn, Wayne State, UD-Mercy, and Michigan State.

:)

Washington University in St. Louis, Kalamazoo College, and Denison University.
It was a hard choice, but WUSTL was too far away and I just didn’t click with Denison.
I took over a month to decide between Michigan and Kzoo, but in the end Michigan just felt right. I did send a note to Kzoo though thanking them for their kindness throughout the admissions process.

OSU, VT, UVA (In-state), Northeastern, BC, BU, Syracuse.

Couldn’t stand how preppy UVA was, it was like the anti-me.

Extremely happy with my decision, thanks to this board for helping me make it :D

Boston College, Purdue, Virginia Tech, Northeastern, Butler, Richmond and a few other safeties
