Turning in SAT/ACT scores to colleges

Okay, so this has really been confusing me. Collegeboard has been sending me emails of whether or not I want to cancel my scores just in case I didn't think I did well, but without me even knowing what score I got for the SAT. Shouldn't it be that we see our scores first, and if we like them we send them or vice versa? What's the deal? Do we not have a choice of sending our scores after we look over them? Or is it that, once we receive our scores, the colleges we chose get sent those scores at the same time as well? That seems to go for the ACT too. When I was registering, it wouldn't allow me to continue without choosing the colleges I wanted my scores sended too. I didn't want to tell them just in case I didn't like my score but that doesn't seem to be the case. ): Please reply!

Any one who takes an SAT test can cancel scores up to a short period after taking the test and before learning of the score. If you cancel, nothing ever gets reported about the test to anyone, i.e., the College Board does not tell colleges that you even took the test. It is designed to allow those who feel they really blew it to kill the test.

You cannot cancel after score is released. That is just the way it is.

You don’t have to send a score to a college that accepts score choice. If you identify a college on your application for taking a test, that college will automatically receive the score when it is released (in fact, it is actually sent a day or two before it is even released to you). But you are not required to list any college on your application to take the test and can wait to order a send after the score comes out; the difference is you will have to pay an additonal fee to send it if you wait to send after the score comes out. Not sure what happened in your case but you should be able to finish the app for the test without designating colleges to receive scores so if there is an issue call the testing agency.

Many colleges accept “score choice” under which you can choose which tests to send to colleges and hide the rest. However, many others require you to send all scores.
