So, my S goes to college in the fall. Currently he has a black sports coat which has been just fine for his high school concerts. But we just went to my D first concert at UNH last week (and it was awesome and she was awesome) and noticed a lot of the guys were wearing tuxedos. So, do we buy a tux or black suit?

It would be nice to do take care of this sooner rather than later...if we do it right maybe we won't have to rent a tux for the prom!

Purchasing a tux and a black suit will be the great wardrobe investments.
Having both makes it easy to accept social invites, being the go to guy for parties/dates.
They have more than paid for themselves and I’ve been to many the fun events especially around the holidays.
Vote for either and both.

We purchased a tux for my son for his senior prom and for a recital and found that purchasing was cheaper than renting twice. He ended up wearing it to a couple of other performances before his hs senior year was over and he now has it at college just in case he needs it.

Check out JC Penney’s. We found tuxes there for around $100. Plus they have shirts and bow ties etc. We bought one for son in highschool and he wore it to two proms, also.

My son was a performance major and a tux was required for all orchestra concerts. We bought a used one from a rental place. Got a very nice fitted outfit for not a ton of money.

Okay so the vote is 6 for tuxes and 2 for both…hmmmm I guess I know what I will be buying.

Next question…are the kids all wearing tuxes with bow ties? That’s what they were wearing at the UNH concert, but I know men are wearing tuxes with straight ties lately.

And get a bunch of extra bow ties. They aren’t very expensive. DS keeps one in the pocket of each formal wear jacket (2 tuxes, tails, dinner jacket) AND one in his instrument case.

We had very good luck with DS’s tuxes and tails…got the two tuxes and the tails at Goodwill of all places…and they fit him like they were tailored for him. We hit it lucky…but you might want to check.

And make sure that he has suitable footwear too! Nothing worse than seeing a guy all tricked out in a tux but wearing ancient, scuffed shoes ( or Chuck Taylors- ugh!)!

Extra bow ties, goodwill, shoes…all very good tips! I am going to add black socks to the list - for some reason his never match, which generally is not an issue, but makes for some very funny photos when they are practicing for marching band wearing shorts, prior to changing into uniforms!

We went tux shopping yesterday. It seems like JCPenney’s has good, relatively inexpensive tux options. In the store they have only one style but they have other styles online.

My S is long and lanky - difficult to fit. So a store like Penney’s that has a line of tuxes, where you pick your size jacket and then choose the size pants that are right size for him is a real advantage. We were able to find a style that will fit his slender frame better, by looking at the tux they had in stock and a suit by a manufacturer that has a more modern fit that works much better for someone shaped like him. We ordered it and are waiting for it to be delivered to the store so we can have their salespeople help us with fit.

So the next question is cumber bun or vest? I know black bow tie.

BTW Men’s Wearhouse has a BOGO sale for the next week. I will be ordering my S 2 fitted tux shirts there.
