TV in college...

In college:

Do you have enough time to watch a signifinant amount of tv?

How much?

What do you use to record the shows you miss? (ex: old-fashioned VCR/ TiVo?)

Oh dude, I totally forgot about that. I definitely need to get a TiVo to record football games.

i never once watched an episode of ANYTHING during my four years of college. not because i didn't have time for it, but because i found it to be a huge waste of time. I currently watch the Office on thursdays at 930 pm.. and that's it.. which is also the only show i've watched since elementary school...

Yeah only a few select shows like Family Guy, Futurama, etc. but that's it. Maybe 3 hours a week on average.

i have all of the family guy seasons so far on dvd.. it seems to be a much better way to go.. that way you can watch them whenever you want to, and you don't have to be like "oh man i cant hang out right now cause i gotta watch my tv show" (which happens all the time in college)

People should buy a TV tuner card for their computer instead of bringing a TV. Much more space efficient and serves as a Tivo as well.

Do u have a link for these TV tuner cards lixuelai?

<a href="http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116625%5B/url%5D">http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16815116625</a></p>

This is a pretty good one. There are tons out there. If you have a laptop there are USB ones as well. For desktops either PCI cards like this or a combo card like the ATI All in Wonder (graphics card with built in tuner) should all work well. Look around on Newegg, it is a pretty good site for things like this.

Yeah, I was thinking about getting a tuner card, but I know nothing about them. What are the requirements for one to work well, and how do you connect it to the cable?

You connect it just like a TV lol (plug in the coaxial cable into the card after you install it into your computer). Requirements are generally pretty low. Unless you have like a 5 year old computer you should be able to use one fine. Just be aware that you need to have a large hard drive if you are planning on using you computer as a Tivo. It is 9gb/hr (less for lower quality recordings, most ppl use lower quality).

Im not much of a computer guy, so what do u mean by large hard drive? Can u give some requirements please.

I guess we all know who the loser in this discussion is.

Im a loser because I dont know how many gigabytes or megabytes or whatever are in a large hard drive? Wow, I think u are the loser.

well i think a 100gig HD should be enough unless you're planning on archiving movies or tv shows and/or recording HiDef shows and you could get an external HD that connects thru USB

Do you have enough time to watch a signifinant amount of tv? Not really...u get time of course but probably not as much as in HS

How much? ANswered above

What do you use to record the shows you miss? (ex: old-fashioned VCR/ TiVo.. yes TIVO

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Tigerdirect yet. Here is the collection of TV tuners they offer:

<a href="http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1427&%5B/url%5D">http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=1427&</a></p>

Don't freak out about the size of your hard drive. USB externals are so widespread these days that you can conveniently store all the data you could ever want.

tripperian35: The hard drive (HD) is the physical component of your computer that stores long-term data. Things like programs, movies, mp3s, and word documents are all stored on your hard drive. Most computer advertisements will include the HD size in the description. You can find out the HD size of your computer by right clicking your 'C' drive in 'My Computer' and clicking on 'Properties'. Most computers today have HDs in the 40-250 gigabyte range, but you can add more space by adding more drives (either internally or externally).

I can't really give you a quantitative value for 'large'. Just get the biggest hard drive you can if you are going to be downloading lots of movies (again, you can always augment this with more HD's if you need to).

Thanks ThinMan.

I actually watched more TV in college than in HS.

Part of it was watching either the Simpsons or PTI on many afternoons waiting for dinner to be served in my fraternity house. Part of it was that there were shows I would watch with friends every week so I rarely missed those. My big "scheduled" show was The OC, but I caught Scrubs a lot too back until the semester I had a night class on tuesday evenings then I got out of the habit. Also watched a lot more sports, particularly baseball playoffs and college football other than just Nebraska.

Whats sucks is that I'll be at IU so I wont be able to catch any of my Cal Bears football games.

Do you have enough time to watch a signifinant amount of tv?
yes - i can probably watch 5-6 hours a day and still maintain a GPA above 2.0 (the minimum you need b/f you get kicked out of most programs) - if you're planning to have something like 3.5 and then apply for professional or graduate school then there is no time for TV in college except for like once a week 2-3 hours for that exceptional something (a show or a game or whatever) - i had a roommate first year who had a tv in our room, and even though she was struggling academically (not getting all A's and some B's like she was used to in HS) she kept watching it for hours every night - few of us would be able to resist watching tv if it is standing right there, but it is not a huge sacrifice to put off that tv for at least first 3 years of college, which are most important if you plan to go further with your education - you can always catch up later b/c that stuff ain't going anywhere

How much?
i personally did not have a TV for the past 5 years - my parents got totally freaked out, hehe, when i would come back home and pay no attention to TV cuz i wasn't used to it - it was not like i did not watch anything - i downloaded torrents of like futurama and simpsons and some movies once in a while -- in the past 2 years i subscribed to nexflix with my roommate and we get some movies once in a while now (I guess i just got tired of downloading tomb raider or russian specialist for three times in a row) - so i spend about 2-4 hours per week watching something -- but my first couple of years in college sometimes i would watch nothing for weeks - i've graduated recently so i can afford a bit more now
