Twice was not the charm!!!!!!!!!

LOL rejected AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't say he didn't try

Oh well.........

congrats to those of you who got / or will get in!!!!!

Andi:

I think you are absolutely right to be "LOL". Sometimes in this crazy process, you just have to chuckle and say that it just wasn't meant to be! I hope Andison is able to chuckle about it, too. Nobody can say he left anything on the table this time around. At the end of the day, you can do everything perfectly and still not match up with one of the slots a particular school is trying to fill.

Given the terrific acceptances Andison already has (that I imagine are difficult enough for you to sort through, weighing the various scholarship offers viz-a-viz a school he already knows that he likes very much from first hand experience), this probably simplifies things for you guys. Ever since his acceptances started rolling in, I've been thinking, "wow, Andison is going to have a tough decision to make." Getting into Swarthmore, too, was going to make a tough decision that much harder, so maybe it's worked out for the best.

I would not want to have to choose between Swarthmore and MIT. They are so attractive, yet so different, that you can't even have an easier type of decision like, "well, they are kind of similar, but I think I like that one a little better." At least this way, you take away a whole layer of doubt about the decision, no matter which way it would have gone. Just chalk it up to fate: one was meant to be; one wasn't.

Andi,
I'm pretty new but have been following your story. Congrats to your son for his great accomplishments this year!
My son's small letter came today from Swat, I too have to laugh. What else can you do? Early write from Amherst, likely from Midd, scholar contender @ Wash U, etc.... At least it makes our spring trip for overnights easier!
He's going to be disappointed when he gets home and opens it, Swat was one of his top choices. What surprises me is that the thing that probably came across most in his apps is how he thirsts for knowledge. I thought Swat was all about it's academics, more than other schools, if that makes sense.
Just goes to show how little we still know about the whole process and how it really is a roll of the dice!
I actually think that by tomorrow we'll all be glad that he has one less school to have to choose from!

Oh yes- we've had a good laugh at his new distinction of being rejected by the same school twice!

we had just been saying that the choice here was one of 'life styles' both of which he could imagine himself living for one reason or another.

Same here. It definitely makes things easier!

sewbusy good luck with the other schools!! You've got excellent choices!

I know. And, I also know that Andison was attracted to both of them. That's what was going to make the decision so miserable. Not the choosing a school to go to, but choosing a school to not go to. This takes "regret" on that score, right out of the equation.

... decisions are... out?

Oh...I got into MIT as well...hope that doesn't mean I won't get into Swarthmore...? lol. I guess I'll find out soon enough!

those of you who've received letters- where do you live?

dinosaurrawr: rejections are, don't know about acceptances.

andi: thanks, and same to you! Still stings, though, doesn't it?

Libs- we're in MA

sewbusy- actually doesn't sting too much--- we're used to it by now :D :D
We kinda expected it.

So wait, Andi's son was accepted by MIT (congratulations) and rejected by Swarthmore?
I feel better- it seems there is some hope for my Brown decision tomorrow. Swarthmore must be infinitely tough to get into, if MIT accepted kids are getting rejected outright!

Oh my god! I got accepted MIT and rejected Swarth, too..Damn..

i hate swarthmore and would NEVER go there. Screw you swarthmore. btw i was waitlisted.

Same thing happened to a friend of andison last year---in at MIT out at Swat

bubblewrap (and others):

Whatever you do, try not to take a waitlist personally. Sometimes, it's just the luck of the draw.

For example, let's say that MIT and Swarthmore are both looking for a violinist, a cello player, and a flute player for next year's freshman class.

MIT gets a violinist and a cello player, early action already sent the deposit, but not a flute player.

Swarthmore gets a flute player and a violinist ED.

You come along in regular decision and have a great flute player application. Terrific application. They both love you. But, guess what? Swarthmore already filled it's "flute" slot; MIT didn't get a flute player yet. Where do you think you'll be accepted and who will waitlist you? None of which says anything about you except that you must have been a great applicant to get into MIT, right?

Understand that we are only talking about 360 "slots" in the freshman class at Swarthmore and 40% of those are already filled ED. They are going to turn away a ton of great applicants, just because of the luck of the draw on which slots need to be filled. Same thing at MIT.

Now, multiply all that by the dozens of different kinds of slots each school is trying to fill -- think of 3-d tic tac toe versus the regular kind. Some students fill "slots" on two or three rows -- an Hispanic flute player from El Paso trumps a white piano playing math major from Boston. See how crazy it gets "assembling" a class?

And, of course, sometimes they just screw up!

"And, of course, sometimes they just screw up!"

Yeah, lets not forget that option...

Yep, rejected from Swarthmore, but accepted to MIT. I'm just really glad MIT accepted me two weeks ago, or I would have been very upset...now, I'm just even more excited that I got into MIT!

hey congrats! You'll likely be there with my s!

Interesting that there are three on this short thread who are out at Swat and in at MIT.

Hmmmm, my daughter's been accepted at MIT, so I guess her Swarthmore rejection will come tomorrow. I will say that at this point she won't be devastated by a rejection. She's gotten a few good acceptances already, and we almost feel greedy hoping for more acceptances. Not that anyone likes to be rejected. Perhaps the Swarthmore "rejects" can all meet up at MIT's CPW next week.
