Twin daughters considering the University of Georgia

I know this is a loose association but... have you met user "georgiatwins"?

Razordad...I think we get Early Action now...seems like every school is different and each family needs to have a different strategy. So, if we apply EA, our next step is scholarship application. This will be the opportunity for the girls to "paint a complete picture" of themselves, correct?

Schrinkrap, no, we have not had the opportunity to meet georiatwins...

We are still hoping to hear from someone with experience with the International Affairs School...

International Affairs school has a great program, but students there have a lot of difficulty registering for classes. I personally know 2 people who have left the major because they couldn't get the classes they wanted.

However, if you can get in Honors you should be able to register early and get into those classes.

Ahhh! All I have to say is I hope your daughters get good scholarships or financial aid. I couldn't believe the OOS price of UGA compared to in-state. I am going there in the spring as a Junior transfer after getting my A.A. In Dec, and I only had no issues picking it as an out of stater because the colleges in VT charge about 35-40K for IN-state tuition (UVM is especially notorious for driving in-state students far far away! Or at the very least driving them to take the majority of their classes at the community college.)

I would recommend the College ******* book on UGA and definitely an extended visit to the school and to see the area. I lived in a town about 40 miles from Athens for the summer, and while I only ventured into Athens a couple of times, I found I liked Georgia enough to stay there for my university career, but it is definitely not going to fit everyone that is not used to the Southern ideals. (I picked it more because it's so different from home, though I hear Athens is a pocket of people a bit different from the average southerners.)

Also, something I have found is rent in Athens=CHEAP! (well, up here it's over $800 for a studio apartment, so extra cheap compared to home). An apartment, though it would include stresses of having to keep on top of bill due dates, would be cheaper than dorm living (I couldn't believe some of the $3500 a semester ones!) I think I will go for (or attempt to get into) college housing for one semester, but from there on out I'm heading for my own apt. Also, everything seems to be within wlking distance, but that doesn't mean it makes for a nice stroll to class. The humidity is awful, though as you are farther south than I, I'm sure you get more of the hot weather GA does, though maybe not the dire (to me atleast) ultra saturation of the air.

Oh, about housing...freshman are required to live on campus for one year. I lived in Creswell and loved it (although, I think that really depends on your roommate and how well you get along). Brumby (all girls) and Russell are the other two freshman high-rise dorms. Check out the housing website for more information when you need to (I wouldn't worry about it now). But as the above post said, it might come out cheaper to live off campus later (a LOT cheaper...living in my apt is $3000+ cheaper than the same thing in ECV).

as always, thank you. My daughters have been hearing that (as some of you have mentioned) the international affairs school is very overcrowded...does anyone have any insight on the quality of the school? Does the overcrowding situation impact the quality of the education and attention to truly engaged students?

p.s. we appreciate the housing advice.

seeking: I have a son who is a sophomore at UGA and a second one who was accepted EA, but went elsewhere. Both of my boys' stats were significantly lower than your girls. I would bet $$ they get in EA. It is so nice to know by Christmas they are in and not have to stress til spring! My boys had plenty of EC's and it was disappointing to leave all that info off the app, but it was so nice to fill in a few numbers, send a transcript and be done with it. It is not binding, so there is no reason NOT to do it. Your girls have NO chance of being denied...they deny very few (low SAT, low GPA, easy classes).

As far as housing goes...some dorms are nicer than others. If your daughters get in the honors program, that dorm is by far the nicest. Yes, apartments are cheaper if you don't buy a meal plan...however, if you want to be sure they are eating, you buy it...so the cost is very comparable. You might do better buying something so you can establish residency, if that is an option for you.

What to do if your girls don't drink: there are many, many clubs and organizations to get involved in that do not involve partying. It depends on their interests. There are many faith-based groups, civic groups, cultural, etc. It is not hard to find a place to belong.

We live less than an hour from UGA, but son doesn't come home much...it's just too fun to stay in Athens! Best wishes to your girls!!
