Two easy questions that I can't figure out :/

Hi,

If I've never had a job/received benefits, do I put "n/a" or "0" for that slot?
(the directions say to put either "n/a" or "0" where appropriate...I think I'm overthinking this)

Second, where do my parents sign on the copy of their Tax Return Form that I'm to send into my schools?

If you have no income and you are filling in a spot for your income amount…you put $0. What question are you answering?

Re: tax returns…on the bottom of the page of the return (printed out) there is a place that says “signature” and “date”. Your parents sign there. The date should be the date they submitted their return.

Well, income-wise, I’ve never had a job, and the questions are like:
“Cash student received/money paid on student’s behalf by non-custodial parent”
“Other cash received”
"Veterans’ noneducation benefits
“Worker’s compensation”
And so on. I put n/a for all of them…is that right?

Also…there is no page with “signature” and “date”…I’m assuming my parents will have to go to their CPA office and get a copy of their signed tax return form?

All $0 in my opinion…but wait until someone else responds.

If your parents filed a 1040A or EZ…that’s only one page. The signature line is at the bottom of the page.

If they filed a 1040 long form…that is two pages…the signature is on the bottom of the second page.

All tax forms have a signature line.

Did your parents efile? Did they print out a copy BEFORE they sent it? Did they have their accountant efile for them? If so…the still should have a copy for their records…look again…there IS a signature line (unless the forms have changed since last year).

Put 0 for money questions. If you didn’t receive any money for the category, 0 is an appropriate answer.

It sounds like your parents gave you a recap of their tax return. That’s not what the schools want you to submit. You need a copy of the actual return, which they can get from their tax preparer.

My parent’s didn’t e-file-they’re technologically challenged, so they have someone else do it for them, and I don’t know if their accountant does e-file. -___-
But looking at this thick tax packet-I guess it’s a “recap” of my parent’s tax return.

It makes sense now. I should have something more like a tax return RECEIPT (tax return copy), which is 1-2 pages.

Thanks so much, thumper1 and kelsmom :D

No, you need the 1040/1040A/1040EZ that they filed, plus any schedules. NO state or local forms are needed. Students often walk in with thick packets from tax preparers, so I know what you are talking about. You just need to browse through & find the relevant forms.

As Kelsmom pointed out…what the college wants you to send might be many pages long. What I was saying…the tax form itself (1040A, EZ or long form) does have a signature spot at the end of that form…which is NOT the schedules. Your school likely will want the tax form, plus all schedules, and W-2 forms. BUT your parents’ signatures go at the bottom of the 1040 whatever they filed.

Ah…okay…I see what you guys mean.

At the bottom of the 1040, I found the signature/date part.
Then I found several pages of schedules pertaining to the 1040 (like schedule E, EIC, SE…)
No W-2 form, but my mom mentioned that they’d filed something different for that instead.

Wow I got it. Thank you again : )

Myname…you don’t FILE your W-2…the W-2 is the statement your parents receive from their employers that state their salary, and withholdings. The information on the W-2 is used to complete the tax forms.

If your parents are self employed in some way, they may have received 1099 forms which also state earnings.

Yep, my parents are self-employed. I think I found the paper you’d mentioned-“California Adjustments-Residents”, and it lists the salaries, etc.

And to be clear-NO other papers are to be included, right? (So I don’t panic…ehh)
