Two sets of questions for UCLA.

Question for a friend: She currently had 42 units during FALL2011 when she filed her application. She has an ongoing 22 units that will make her meet the 60 minimum requirement during this Spring2012. She has the same major as me with a 3.9, I got in with 3.2, and should be getting her IGETC's and everything. UCLA rejected her and it felt like they dropped her because of the "lack of units".

She got an email saying that she can be admitted as a sophomore but I THINK that if she was admitted as a sophomore when she has 60 units, then shouldn't she just be put into Junior standing...?

Is there anything she can do, I told her to call the office to clear things out. I mean, I think she should be in... but I'm no rep. Can she like... appeal or something.

Question for me: I didn't complete my FAFSA but I started it. Is it still possible to finish it now, and apply for the Blue and Gold plan? Or is it way too late...? Also, are there any aids left out there...?

Thanks.

well, if they will admit her, she should accept if she wants to go to UCLA. and she can graduate whenever she has enough degree applicable units as far as i know. but the good news is that they will accept her. which i find amazing since she is taking 22 units (a lot for one semester) and did not meet the 60 unit requirement in their estimation. so she is super lucky! congratulations both of you!

But she was to meet the requirement before she transfer though. So I don’t know why they’re admitting her as a sophomore not a junior, did that make sense? Like she was to finish this school year with the 60 so before the next school year, if she was to move to UCLA, she would have had the 60.

can i ask you a question, what major are you in? I got reject to UCLA even though I have a TAP, and I dont think they considered my alt major.

I’m a Linguistics and Asian Languages and Cultures. I did as much linguistics classes. I mean there were 4 classes offered at my school. And then I’m taking Korean and currently on my second year. I took ap Spanish in high school. IGETC done with around 90 units.

@iwillfly
as far as i know, when students show that they have registered for such HIGH numbers of units on their semester just prior to admission, it looks a bit fishy to schools who prefer students with a steady and more reliable unit load leading up to admissions. 12 units is considered Full Time.

since her GPA is high, i suspect that they are giving her the benefit of the doubt, and allowing her to be admitted. but they are not certain that she will complete all those units—units In Progress are still suspect in the minds of admissions. my guess is that she completed her math and english prior to this current semester? i know they do not like to see Math or English GE listed as IP. in my mind she is VERY VERY lucky to get admitted at all with 22 units IP! and she should check her contract for admissions to see what GPA they expect her to maintain prior to admittance. a 3.9 with 40 units is nothing compared to a 3.9 with 60 units. see what i mean? good luck!

Did you submit FAFSA as “will files taxes” if so then yes. Also, you don’t apply for blue & gold, it’s automaticc, but won’t be adjusted until a few weeks before fall begins. Last year my FA award didn’t reflect blue & gold and I was freaking out but they assured me it would be manually adjusted late in the summer…it was adjusted just one week before fall started.

@Northbeach I understand what you mean. I’m telling her to just take the sophomore position just so she’ll be in the system. If she does do well this semester with her 22 units, then she can just clear things up since she will have the 60 minimum and should be considered as a junior. I get that your golden classes shouldn’t be taken near the end of your days in CC but ehhh… I didn’t know her back then.

@SMCguy I’m actually continuing my Fafsa right now. My cousin told me that someone told her that I can turn it in until 30th. If it’s true or not, I don’t know but I’ll do it nonetheless. Could it be possible that they still consider it because it was started but not properly submitted. My ePal has that as one of the possible reasons why I don’t have a generated ePal yet. They told me that I should still submit it so I’m thinking maybe they’ll still humor me.

Submit it today, you can always revise it later.

@SMCguy I only didn’t fully complete it back then because my dad hasn’t filed his Income Tax Return but I don’t know if I marked it like that. HAHA. I think he has it now so I’ll just fill it out completely.

I successfully filed my 2012-2013 one today. I got the EFC value and stuff…

I’m currently taking 26 units just to barely meet the unit req. They accepted me no problem. What happened is probably some of her units are not transferable so she doesn’t actually have 60 units.

I sent in my appeal to LA on time. However, I just checked my application for the heck of it and saw that under languages it said that I only spoke French (French is my first language, but I certainly am fluent in English as well!). Is there anyway I can notify LA of this error?
Also, I understand they don’t accept letters of recommendation, but could my counselor send in my updated grades with an evaluation of me as a student (i.e. has always taken the most challenging classes offered, top 5%, etc.)
Thanks guys. I just found out about the language error, and I’m a bit anxious.

is she actually considering NOT accepting admission to UCLA? haha. that just makes me laugh. oh well, people are completely goofy. unless she was accepted to stanford and CAL i think she is kooky. doesn’t she realize that taking 22 units in one semester looks bad?

great, i am happy that they are trusting in you to get good grades this semester while taking so many units. but i suppose it specifies that you must maintain a reasonably high GPA in order to attend UCLA? some kids can do it, but all the kids at my school who tried failed and now have lousy GPA’s. a person can get arrested, file bankruptcy, and numerous other things and those will be erased from their record eventually, but one bad grade is there long after we are dead and buried. heavy GPA loads are risky.

from what i have read, the schools do not care about prereqs IP. they care about GE Math and English IP, only.

She’s actually considering not taking the Sophomore standing. She thinks that she’ll pay a lot more since she’s international. That’s why she’s considering staying at the CC again and “cleanly” get her 60, but my advice was that that would be another waste of time because of the whole once a year opening for the UCs. I feel bad because she would be stuck when she should be in, in my opinion.

I did 27 units last Fall and I got 5 A’s and 4 B’s.

ah, well, they probably posted her financial aid package online. i could not afford the out of state tuition even for one year. but she can just call the school and discuss this. maybe she can graduate in two years. good luck.

I think she’s just afraid that she has to take extra classes and spend more time, thus more money, if she was to be a Sophomore, three years left, instead of a Junior, two years.

I think if she could clear things up and be in Junior standing and still be admitted, I think she would SIR.
