I'm a sophomore in Wesleyan (not really target school but then Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse did come) looking to apply to Investment banks this summer. Should I try my luck and apply to all or save my energy for next year? The main question, I guess, is whether my chances next year will be affected if I get rejected this year?

If you have a high GPA and good references it's worth a try, but this summer will be very tough for all.

Especially for a sophomore. Even in good times, internships for sophomores in big firms are hard to come by since most firms target juniors. No one would hold it against you if you don't have a sophomore finance internship.

Not at all. I have gotten interviews with companies that previously rejected me.

Best shot would be private wealth management at one of the BB such as UBS. If UBS does not recruit on your campus, save up some money for a flight out to NYC. If you think the firm should pay for it... well I can think of 100 other students who would pay $500 for a shot at a BB internship. Its all grunt work(cold calling and basic administrative work) and pay is crappy, maybe $13-14/hr. But the contacts you make while in NYC will be priceless.

I think all BBs provide housing stipends of about $2k which is enough for you to secure a shared room for 2 months. And your salary should pay for the third month.

Don't waste your time applying for S&T/M&A/Quant type internships, those are only given to rising seniors with the exception of JPMorgan's sophmore program but that's an extreme longshot for even the most exceptional candidates.

x2, my roommate last summer was from a target(northwestern) had a 1530 SAT score and was a PWM intern at UBS. From what I hear, UBS hires a lot of sophmores for their PWM program. But you cannot imagine how many people I met who had relatives already in the business.
