Some answers:

Q: When acceptances are announced on December 14,
will merit based scholarships also be listed?

A: Yes; or shortly after. Check your status on BlackBoard - Financial Aid.

Q: Any suggestions on increasing chances for honors?

A: There is nothing you can do increase your chances of being immediately accepted into [Honors. This is strictly data driven by the quality of applicants each semester. The trend has been to become much more difficult with each passing semester as the quality of freshman applicants improves. The 2011 Honors profile was:

See: The Florida State University | FSU Honors Program](http://honors.fsu.edu/about.html)

If you are rejected for Honors at the outset you can petition for inclusion. See the link for petition requirements.

Any of the east campus dorms provide a good freshman social experience. Reynolds, Jennie Murphree, Landis and Broward are all very social. Students in any renovated dorms do fine.

I actually wouldn’t recommend Wildwood honestly. Even though I lived there freshman year (and liked it, all things considered), it’s expensive and not really conveniently located to, well, anything (except the gym and stadium).

One big plus is that it doesn’t require a meal plan like many of the renovated east side dorms do, and the rooms are pretty decently sized (especially compared to say, Salley). Everything aside though, unless you decide that having the newest dorm on campus is a big deal, Wildwood probably isn’t all that enticing.

Of course, my rant about it being expensive doesn’t really mean much I guess, since almost all the suite-style dorms are the same price (nearly $700/month). Then it really comes down to whether you want to be forced into a meal plan and where on campus you want to live (central location like Broward and others, SW side like Wildwood, NW side like Salley, Smith, Kellum).

Pasbal-
Thanks for the reply-
OK,
but were would you suggest a group of five nerdy freshman friends majoring in Mathematics / Physics, who cannot cook from Miami who wish to live close to one another and putting money aside as not a decision factor ???

And what’s the best suite-style dorm for a person who want to make new friends and be social? :). I’m going into bio/ business …and I can’t cook either…and would like to be close to majority of the big spots on campus and such. This would be my ideal dorm, but I don’t know of it even exists haha.

I assume when you all say you can’t cook, you’re implying that you don’t care about a meal plan requirement as you’re going to get one regardless?

Cawthon houses the WIMSE learning community. That would be “Women in Mathematics, Science, and Engineering.” You can figure out where I’m going with that.

Not really sure which suite style halls tend to be social; just know that you will need to try harder in a suite style whereas the community halls build strong community far more naturally.

Yeah if I go I’m planing on Cawthon being my top choice. Are.community style dorms really as bad as people make them out to be?

reign- They’re not as bad as some stories make them seem, but I wouldn’t want to live in one. My current roommate lived in Kellum last year and he said it was pretty bad. Aside from that though he didn’t really say what was so bad.
Something a lot of people don’t think of is that community dorm bathrooms are cleaned a hell of a lot more frequently than suite-style dorms, unless a suite-style resident cleans them regularly.

david- If you’re a person that is going to get a meal plan anyway, then I would say an east-side dorm is probably a good idea. I’m with Matt on this one, if I was in your shoes I’d probably go with Cawthon ;). Then I’d have Broward, Gilchrist, and Landis among my choices.
Keep in mind though that a lot of the Math and Physics classes aren’t going to be on that side of campus though. They’re likely going to be on the west side near Salley, Smith and Kellum, but I do not really recommend those dorms.

david, if money is no object for you and your 4 nerdy buddies who can’t cook, why don’t you guys approach President Barron to rent you his official FSU house across street from campus? He is always looking for extra money; he could move into a dorm room with a hot plate. The president’s house probably has a maid and a cook too for you.

^^^ That seems kind of mean! I think he was just asking some valid questions.

Agreed. That is an uncalled for response.

No problem-
To clarify, cost not being a factor as most of the double freshman dorms are basically the same price anyways…, I am still seeking advise from anyone who can advise which dorms are best for an incoming college freshman and his “nerdy” friends who will also purchase a meal plan.
Question-
Since Cawthon Hall houses the WIMSE center for women pursuing a science degree, is this dorm also an option for males pursuing a science degree ?
by the way----PLEASE be honest as if I pick the wrong dorm for myself and my four friends, they have threaten to kick my azz. THANKS

I’m not trying to offend anyone. david said on this board previously that his family is wealthy; I’m just trying to help david out.

Are you and your nerdy friends Honors material?

If so, Landis would fit you and it’s close to the Suwannee dining hall.

Tell your friends to do their own research? If they are relying on YOU to do everything for them, are they really your friends?

If any of them screw up so to speak and don’t get their housing application submitted and paid for as soon as they can, they very well may end up not getting a chance to room anywhere near the rest of the group.

Hi- FUSDAD1
Sir-
Myself and one other, “possibly”, but honestly, I have been around my other friends all my life, and we are all interested in staying together as acceptance to honors, no matter how well your stats are not for certain.

To Tallalassie-
You are very correct and no matter what my financial status may be, myself and my friends are still seeking advise on securing the appropriate housing. Additionally, my family is also footing part of the bill for two of my friends as their family has not been as fortunate as mine.
All of my friends and our family came together to this wonderful country together from Cuba about 16 years ago and we have agreed to stay together for the rest of our lives.

Your open note post was ridiculous david, if you feel that way why not just stay in Miami with people of similar mentalities, at least you will fit in at the parties.

A good way to combat the high prices at dining halls would be to hit up taco tuesday at El Jaliscos.

^Yes

Don’t know where you heard that everyone was accepted for summer term, but that is false.

Cawthon’s basement and first floors are for guys that are not in an LLC. If you do want Cawthon, you’ll want to have a great priority number.

If you’re going to be in honors, then Landis is probably your best bet.

well, im going shopping for FSU apparel today. has anyone done the same?
