Two years of Calculus?!

Hello, really need you guys help. UCLA and CAL both require two years of calculus as a math major transfer student. However, I started my CC with Pre-Calculus and did not take math for winter quarter. I will finish math 1B this summer and 1A 1B are the only two math courses I have done before I apply. My question is should I apply this fall or wait for next year because they require two year of calculus. BTW, I want to apply as a Statistic major, it also requires two years of calculus.

Wait. You’ll have a much better chance at getting accepted with prereqs done, you’ll save a ton of money, and you won’t risk hitting the unit cap at UC.

This is a confusing question. Are you saying that you’re on the quarter system and that you’ve only taken 1A and 1B but that you would take 1C in the Fall? Are you afraid you won’t be able to finish before you transfer or that they will only see a few classes completed by the time of your application?

Also, there are not usually a full 2 years worth of Calculus. What I think you mean is that you need to finish Calc 1-3 and then probably a differential equations / linear algebra class which are not part of the Calculus sequence. If so, check on the pre-reqs because you can usually take those classes and the final part of Calculus simultaneously.

Thanks for replying. If I extend one year what should I do for another academic year because I will reach 90 quarter units by the end of the next spring. Suppose I applied this year and got reject, could I apply same school again?

I don’t think you should wait an additional year. I think you should finish the math sequence and apply this year. What CC do you go to?

Thanks for replying. Yes, I’m on the quarter system and unfortunately my school provides Calculus from 1A-1D which means I can finish the calculus by winter. In addition, I will take the linear algebra class and calculus at the same time in winter. Just like what you said I’m afraid that they will only see a few classes completed on my application and consider I’m not competitive enough. My current GPA is quite good 3.92, I’m worrying if it worths a shot?

I retract my previous statement.

Apply this year, they look at your planned classes as well when you apply so you’ll be plenty competitive, especially with your gpa :)

Thank you all!!!

Just make sure that you have all of the following planned to be completed by the time you transfer:

Freshman calculus
Multivariable calculus
Linear algebra
Differential equations
Discrete math (if available at your CC or a nearby one)
Introductory statistics (preferably calculus-based if available)
IGETC or as many as possible courses that will fulfill breadth requirements at the schools you are looking to transfer to
