I'm interested in applying to UCLA for Fall 2015 as a math/econ major, but I'm barely taking Calc 1. I plan on taking Calc2 next semester, however UCLA states all transfer Mathematics majors are required to complete 2 years of calculus before transferring. Does anyone know if UCLA is lenient and admitts students who haven't taken the full calc sequence?

If UCLA says you need two years of calculus to be admitted, then you’ll need two years of it to be admitted. Calculus is pretty important in math, so I strongly doubt they’ll admit you if you will not have completed calculus 2 by the end of spring, and perhaps the higher-level math classes, like linear algebra, differential equations, and calculus 3.

Just try to complete as many math classes as you reasonably can. It’ll help a lot.

Thanks for the advice Cayton. I heard from someone on here that UCLA makes some exceptions for the math/econ major so I just wanted some clarification.

You need Calc 1-3 and either Linear Algebra or Differential Equations.

It is actually a year and a half of Calculus on the semester system. You will need Calc 1-3 and LA For math econ. I am going to be apply Fall 2016 I think and will have everything done including Differential equations by next fall. Catch is, my current GPA is only a 3.2

Just wondering, do you guys know if you need to take everything on Assist.org to transfer. Like can I take one or two of those classes at UCLA if I were to get in, granted I finish every other req on the list? The only reason being is I would have to take calc 3, linear algebra, and discrete mathematics next semester

If is says required on Assist, you have to take it. If it says recommended on Assist, you probably should take it.

Just read carefully, some major say “take two social science classes” and then list 7-8 classes that will satisfy the requirement.

Entering UCLA, you will be designated at a “pre-math” major. So, you do not have to have all “requirements for the major” completed, and need only to take upper division work.

However, if courses are required (see post #6) to get admitted, they are required. Talk to the transfer center at your CC. If you do not bump into the unit cap, you may be better off staying another year and finishing off Comp Sci, and the other pre-major requirements. Another possibility is to take one or two math classes over the summer at UCLA or UC Berkeley (or at the CC).

However, UCLA may require completion by the end of Spring, if the classes are required for admission. Check with the transfer office.

I don’t think Discrete Math is a requisite- just the Calc 3 and Linear Algebra or Diff Eq.
