Hey!

I'm interested in studying film making, but since I live abroad I'm having trouble finding out about the different kinds of film schools.. Could you please help me? :)

Most importantly, I don't want to attend a university that will not allow any artistic freedom and just simply shape me into some pattern... Which are those?

Which schools are more hands-on or "first learn that create"?

Thanks!!

In my experience, there’s three types of film schools: Art Schools, Universities with a Film Department, and Trade Schools. Art Schools are specialized universities that have the resources of a 4-year institution and put it all towards arts education. Example: Columbia College Chicago. These usually offer in-depth and specialized degrees in film but can get a tad pricey. Universities with a film department is fairly self-explanatory, it’s a traditional 4-Year University or College that offers a film major among it’s many schools. It’ll be the traditional college experience but i’ve found that unless you know and enjoy the way the school does the program going in, you might find your creativity stifled and feel shoved into a pattern. (Like i am feeling now at my current film school, which is why im currently transferring to an art school). They can be a good experience, you just need to get all the details first. Example: UCLA. And finally, trade schools are 2-year programs that aim to give you working knowledge and on-the-job experience. They’ll teach you the technical aspects of the craft, but nothing more. Example: Tribeca Flashpoint Media Arts Academy. Every film program is slightly different, so get to know them. I’d definitely go on tours of places before making a decisions. If your looking for a “first learn then create” type situation, i’d say look into either an Art school where you’ll be learning and creating, or try a trade school where you can learn then go out into the job market and create.

Thanks!

What are other art schools, I think these are the kind I’m looking for :)

Also, I live abroad so I can’t visit the places, but does anyone know how can I find out the course and the vibe?
