What is a typical bio major schedule for sophomore and junior year? I want to go pre-med so what is a typical schedule that I may expect to see. Please don't direct me to the SB bulletin b/c I saw that already and I don't trust it. If I follow it, I may have a hard time w/ MCATS. Also is it necessary to take BIO 201. It seems like a useless class to me if I don't expect or plan to ever take an ecology or evolutionary course. Can't i get away with BIO 202, 203, 204 & 205 and then take a class like Animal Physiology or Caner Bio or Bio Chem?

no. bio 201 is REQUIRED for bio major.

There's no way out of 201 for anyone, period. Which I honestly think makes sense, since how could the school in good conscience graduate a bio major who knew absolutely nothing about ecology?

However, it's very common for bio majors who aren't interested in ecology to leave 201 until late (senior year even) and not be behind schedule. I'm taking 201 this fall, having finished the other intro classes a long time ago and taken plenty of upper division stuff since then. Just be really careful you have room for it somewhere--I know a guy who never managed to fit 201 into his schedule (and he had something of an excuse, since the labs always conflicted with other required classes or his work schedule) and even though he'd filled EVERY other requirement and then some, even though he'd taken classes with 201 as a prereq with the prof's permission, they wouldn't let him graduate with a bio major without having taken 201. Fortunately, he doubled in linguistics, so he could still graduate on time--but with a bio minor with over 70 credits toward it! He'd already been accepted to med school, so spending an extra semester to do 201 just wasn't an option, and had he not been a double major he would have been in real trouble.

Honestly, just suck it up. I also came in with the attitude that ecology wasn't something I was interested in, blah blah blah, why should I take it... but the ecology and evolution faculty are actually really cool people, and it's an interesting subfield, probably more interesting than you're giving it credit for. Ecology in high school bio is just boring memorization of terms, but it's definitely not that anymore in college. And there's no lab anymore, so you really don't have a scheduling excuse.

So no other higher level bio course could replace it. I mean I just wanted to take Animal Physiology and like Cancer Bio to better prep for MCATs. Well, I guess it won't be so bad. Btw is it smart or dumb to take Physics and Bio 201 and Orgo in soph yr. I mean it will be hard though.

Reread my post... if there are other things you want to take first, it's pretty common to leave 201 until late.

You can still take whatever upper level stuff you want once you've filled the prereqs. However, Mammalian Physiology and Cancer Bio are not stuff covered on the MCATs, so don't take them for that reason. Also, Cancer Bio is a new class that filled up really, really fast this semester, so don't count on getting it for a while.

Taking 201, orgo, and physics at the same time is going to be easier than taking an upper level course, orgo, and physics at the same time.

Im takin Calc 126, Orgo, Physics and two or one Ged. Ed's and I'm in my Soph year..
