Typical Math Courses for Pre-Business Students

S will be entering OSU this Fall as a pre-business student. Any general guidance from current students or parents in terms of fulfilling the math requirement for a student who has successfully taken Honors Calc at the HS level (A- range)? Is Math 1131 the typical course? if so, how is that course? What other math courses do many pre-business students take? Any courses to clearly stay away from?

I know the math placement may dictate options, just looking for a few typical options most freshman pre-business students with HS Calc take. S is decent at math, not in love with it, so wants a course he can comfortably do well in to fulfill requirements, so he is able to apply for his business major ASAP. He plans to major in Marketing.

Thanks for any input!

I don’t think you get many options about where they will want you to start. It really depends on your placement.
Here’s a link about math placement for business pre-majors: [Fisher College of Business | Pre-Orientation: Math Requirements](http://fisher.osu.edu/undergraduate/future-students/pre-orientation/math-requirements/)

Here’s one with details about current classes but bear in mind the numbering has not been updated for semesters (I think 1130 would be 130): [Courses | Department of Mathematics](http://www.math.osu.edu/courses/homepages.html)

RMGsmom, thanks for the links, very helpful. S is completing Honors Calc now, so am encouraging him to take the placement test at the end of the semester. We’ll go from there.

Doesn’t apply to everyone, but this still may help:

My friend took AP calc in highschool and tested into Calc II at Ohio State. He found that this course was very hard, especially as a first quarter freshmen, and wished he would have started in Calc I (even though he tested into calc II). I tested into pre-calc, which was fairly easy, and went through Calc I and II getting A’s.

Although I had to take more classes, I think it was beneficial to acclimate myself to the way college courses are before jumping into a hard class. My friend wishes he would have started lower, because he killed his GPA in his first quarter with a C (he was not a C student by any account).

Just a bit of advice!

OSULolz

Thanks for the insight, that is kind of what I expected to hear. How many math courses are required for pre-business students? If he placed in pre-calc, how many additional math courses are required? Is there a calc for business students? S would like to fulfill requirements to apply to his major (Marketing with Sales concentration, at the moment anyway) ASAP and just doesn’t want math requirements to kill his chances.

Well, we are currently on the quarters system (and that is how I will graduate, so I don’t know a ton about semesters), but for us you needed to get through Calc II. For me this meant Pre-calc, Calc I/II, which was 3 quarters, so I assume you could take the equivalent under two semesters.

There was a business calc series that from what I understood was marginally easier, but I took the regular calc series because I started off in Computer Science. Beyond that (again, under quarters) we also had to take an easy, basic stats course.

Sorry I’m not very tuned in to semesters, but hopefully that helps!

Thanks OSU, it does…got it, need to get to, and through, Calc II. S is currently in a block schedule high school, so pretty familiar with semester approach, hoping that helps him manage well with the change at OSU to semesters as well. :)
