So I was just looking through my transfer application submissions and found typos in the supplemental essays of my first choice school. In the first essay I made two typos. I think I forgot an "a" twice. In the second essay, it was way worse: I forgot a comma, a period, an "a", switched two words, and used a plural in my sentence when it should have been singular.

So, there were grammatical errors in my essays. However, I think the rest of my essay showed that I indeed know how to write in English. I use commas and period all over the place but these errors still make me think this looks is going to ruin my chance. Five errors in one essay is hard to look past.

What do you guys think?

Is English your first language? How strong is the rest of your app? Is the school you’re applying to big on writing?

Yes English is my first language, which is why this makes me look pretty bad. Other than that I have a 4.0 from my first semester and I think my recs are fine. But, I do have to submit a Mid-Year report which has 1 C+ on it and one B, but I had both my professors comment that these grades are both based on one assignment, and I am sending an updated copy next week when I get my other exams back.

The school is an extremely competitive liberal arts school, so yes the writing is a big deal. It’s just that my ideas are fine I feel but those typos…I’m planning for the worst.

Some schools say that when they say “show interest in us”, they also mean “take care with your essays.” But IMHO, these typos seem to be pretty small in the big scheme of things. I also think the content of your essay and the strength of your app will matter most in the end.
Good luck. And PLEASE don’t panic! They know this is a big deal for us all so I don’t think they’ll flip out over a few typos.

Thanks so much! I’ll try!
