Hello,
I am currently finishing up my Junior year in high school in the next two weeks. My dream is to go to U.C. Davis or UCSB for college. I just took the SAT in May and I got a score of 1860. Also, my college GPA for UC schools is a 4.3 (4.0 sophomore year, 4.5 Junior year). I was wondering if anyone could help me out and let me know if that is good enough to get into U.C. Davis/UCSB. I would greatly appreciate it!
Thanks so much!

The SAT score is decent, and so is the GPA. But what about extra curricular activities, volunteer experience, that kind of stuff? Grades and SAT scores are critical, but are not the only means by which they will evaluate your application.

By the way, I had a friend with a 1950 SAT and a 4.0+ gpa get rejected from Davis a couple years ago… he had some E.C.'s, but not enough. (But he managed to get into his number 2 choice, UC San Diego, so it all worked out)

UC Davis also weighs heavily how many A-G courses you took throughout high school.

Thank you for responding…

extracurriculars: JV track & JV XC freshman year
sophomore year: basketball, soccer, softball & equestrian
could not compete in sports after sophomore year due to medical issue…
over 50 hours community service volunteering at private animal shelter
10 hours volunteering at hospital (will try to do more in the summer)
5 hours volunteering adopt-a-highway

all of the courses I have taken are A-G courses except PE, health, & geography (freshman year anyway)

Is this alright?

Any suggestions as to what I should be focusing on doing in the summer?

I really want to make sure I do whatever it takes to get in and I will sacrifice all of my summer vacation to do this as well as re-study for the SAT to take it again in October. What is the most important thing I can do? I haven’t even looked into any other colleges besides the UCs so I’m stressing out…

Thanks for all the help!

The extracurriculars look pretty good. I recommend that you choose a couple of volunteer opportunities and invest heavily in them (as opposed to spreading yourself around) - which it looks like you have done, for the most part. It always looks better to have volunteered 50+ hours at two or three places compared with 5-10 hours at a dozen different organizations.

Your SAT score (1860) is probably good enough, but maybe shoot for 1900 or even 2000 to make sure. And don’t forget about subject tests.

Overall, I’m pretty sure you’ll get in. Keep it up and I wouldn’t worry too much.

Raise your SAT, and take subject tests and get 700+

ACCEPTED
but now I’m considering UCSB after visiting both campuses, I’ve lived in Socal all my life, don’t know if I could adjust to Norcal weather. But thank you everyone for your advice and support! I made it!!!

^ lol… i was reading this, and i thought you were accepted as a junior and i was like *** until i saw the dates… haha. congrats! you should go to UCD!

Come to UC Davis! The weather is actually pretty nice here. I pretty much got a full ride at SB (due to Regents) but Davis is swell. The biological science department is top notch so if that’s your major, come to Davis!

It’s hot in Davis, but compared to Socal it can’t be too bad.

im from san diego, dont worry you will be fine
if you love davis, it dont matter :)

i will say tho there is cold for SD and then there is Davis cold. it slips down another 10 degrees or so than what you’re used to for “winter”, but it doesn’t snow.

oh, and spring MORE than makes up for it. picnic day is absolutely glorious :)

Weather should essentially be a non-factor with all UCs. I can’t explain the myths people make up in their minds about Nor Cal weather.
